The fish shop I was at on the weekend had this Mbu Puffer

Such a shame they need a huge tank.
They seem really interesting fish to keep.

Can't quite remember, but it was expensive - aorund £100 (R2,100)

In the past, I have seen ones about double this size for £250 (R5,250)

they are expensive. become huge but i think if will be the coolest fish to have. marine puffers have excelent personalities. so these will probably also have.

    Thanks @Reedfish.
Not a bad price for a rare fish, over here we would pay around R3000 - R4000 for fw stingray, around R5000+ for asian arowana's, so in the context of the UK GBP150 is probably a fair price for that fish.
At the end of the day it will always come back to supply & demand and willing seller and willing buyer determining the final price.

I agree with what you say about prices of rare fish, I also think the ease of breeding them in captivity plays a role in the price.
And whilst yes, something rare does cost you 3 to 4 thousand rands, your passion for what you want will make you save up for it.

Its not just rare fish.... lets look at all the fancy substrates and ferts etc that sometimes go into a planted tank... if you have passion for it, you buy it and if you keep record of what you spent it quickly adds up!!!!

Was going through the pet section of classifieds the other day and people want over 2000.00 rands for unregistered pups not even inoculated! and people buy them!!

Any hobby/ leisure activity/ social sport/activity will sting you financially. Try cycling, playing golf, collecting art etc, etc, etc. In almost any leisure activity there is no ceiling on what you can spend, but you have options, you can choose to do it, or not do it, keep guppies, keep asian aro's, or fancy koi.:)
