Hi guys , I've got an old 5 gallon tank that I got donated and I was wondering if there are any fresh water tropical crabs that are bred in the SA Aquarium industry that would even fit in a 5 gallon. Have seen nothing on crabs in this hobby in SA so any light shed on the topic would be helpful!

(Or are they in the same boat as fresh water crayfish - being illegal)

    Hi @Shrimp_Hoops i think they’re illegal yes.
You could do a betta fish perhaps? Or a few chilli rasboras and neocaridina shrimp?

Some crabs seem to be legal but just really hard to find. And the mexican dwarf crayfish seems to be in a grey area due to its size I think. You can do 2 or 3 pea puffers in a 5 gallon of you provide enough hiding spots.

Thanks , ive taken a look at a few sources but still no luck on specific crab species. Perhaps crayfish is just a broad term theyre using to imply that alien crustaceans are unwelcome. Ill stick to shrimp , but for a second there got excited of the prospect of starting some panther crab breeding program XD

I know aqua empire had some vampire crabs a few months ago. They were sold out quickly.

Well there's not a regulation like there is back home. Also there are not many open water systems that you can dispose of invasive species. And to be honest hardly anything other than what is naturally occurring can tolerate temperature over 50degrees celcius.

Going for a swim in the beach for example is equivalent to taking a dip at natal spa hot springs.

I haven't seen any crabs at any of the pet shops in Cape Town. And trust me when I say I have an obsession with going to every aquarium shop I know of on a regular basis in the hopes of finding cool stuff
I saw some crayfish yesterday at Northern Aquatics Bothasig though. I didn't actually know what the species was, but I googled Mexican Dwarf Crayfish and they looked exactly like that.
