I've had a pair of angels that have paired off for about 6 months now, and have spawned like clockwork every 8-10 days. Being in a community tank has resulted in ZERO success.

At first the parents would eat the eggs before they even had a chance at survival. They've now learnt from their bad habits that possibly eating them will not pass on the necessary genes to creates the little angels they are trying to achieve.

The last 3 spawns have made it successfully to the wriggler's stage, and even once they were just beginning to be free swimming.

But alas, in the community tank, the chances of survival are next to nothing. Yesterday evening I did my water change on the big 4ft tank, and after much discussion with the other half, she agreed to let me set up the small tank to try and breed the angels a little more successfully.

So a 50litre tank has been set up; 50W heater @ 27deg, filtration at 200litres per hour through a filter in the hood (containing filter sponge and seeded ceramic rings from the big tank), and an airstone for effect. They have been given a slate that is resting on some suction cups to breed on (altho they usually use the filter or glass), as well as some plastic plants and a terracotta pot for visual effect. I've decided not to go with any substrate, (to make cleaning easier), and hence the plastic plants.

Here is a full tank shot:

I will keep you updated and posted on when things start to happen...!
(P.S. Can anyone tell me what Angels these are?)

Gee Zoom good luck with the Angels hope you have babies soon. Those are nice looking Angels don't know what kind though.
When i came home tonight all hell has broken loose in my Angel tank, the two biggest ones are chasing the other three all over the tank, they don't seem to be guarding any specific area and they also aren't worried about the cories its just the other Angels getting chased and nipped do you think that they are maybe getting ready to spawn. Sorry didn't mean to hijack your thread.

It's possible that the 2 biggest ones have paired off. Me female is substantially smaller than the male.

How big is your tank? Have u got any large leafed plants for then to lay on?

Feed the very well for a few days, and do a few waterchages with water that is colder than your tank water... This should cause them to spawn pretty soon.

My tank is a three foot with lots of plants and big flat rocks. I'm feeding them a good variety of food, and i will do the water changes as you suggest. Thanks.

Um... No. But I'm waiting for the babies to actually hatch, and for the wife to see them and get all cootchie coo... then the grow out tank will come.

Yep, they get dark vertical stripes when they get aggro, or protecting

    Told you they were stupid...

    And they have spawned...

But I did mention they were stupid... and they didn't use the slate... they used the uplift pipe for the pump. Hehee. Fortunately the bottom is covered with a stocking, so they shouldn't be sucked up the pump.

I have a slight problem in that a lot of much gets traped on the stocking, thus inhibiting the flow of the water, so the filtration drops a bit... now I can't do anything about it.

    very nice Zoom!

you should rather change that internal filter for sponge filter and airpump... sponge filter will provide some goggas for the fry to feed on and more importantly it will not suck up the babies/eggs...

Yeah, I was thinkin of doing that Dolphin.

I was still in 2 minds about leaving these angels in the tank. They seemed pretty stressed out for a few days when I moved them from the big tank to the breeding tank. I was going to give it a week, because they were "due" to spawn again this week. And if they settled down, I would have changed the hood filter to a sponge filter.

Just gotta go past a LPS and grab one. But it's no good that they laid the eggs onthe flipping pump, because now I gotta leave the pump in the water for the eggs.

How long should I leave the old filter on before I turn it off... I mean obviously the new sponge filter would need to become extablished, wouldn't it? Or can I immedietely introduce the sponge filter and turn off the pump?

Maybe add a air stone to help with water circulation.

Donny, if you look at the first picture, you will see a whole bunch of bubbles coming up from behind the slate. There is an airstone in there.

you're going to have to keep the filter in there while the sponge becomes populated with bacteria... atleast 2 weeks... it will speed up the process if you add some type of bio filter start products - just read the instrcutions carefully if you do.

Then they could have serious Rio Negro / Peru - strain in them, and is known as the
Silver Scalare. The males are always bigger than the females. When you buy some, don't always take the biggest of a batch, as you will miss the young colourful females!
I got my first pair from the Prof, and have about 20+ angels. I have about 4 breeding pairs
and have supplied many of fellow members and local Pet shops!
