Hi all I have a big problem at the moment!!!!!:eek::mad:
I looked at my fish tank and saw that 2 of my kribs are laying on the floor breathing rapidly and they look very bloated with a long thing haning out of them.....
and I noticed the same on my golden guramui as well :amazed:
but he is not breathing so rapidly.
What can I do to save these fish? because I don't want to loose them :wondering:

First though that comes to mind is digestive problem..Sounds like the "long thing" might be a "poop tube"
Wrong feeding - Wrong meat or pellets they can not digest.
To much feeding - They are eating more than they can digest.

Sorry Garth, that is where I have to stop... As far as I know the remedy has something to do with squeezing the fish affected. How and where, I do not remember. Zafgak and Veegal know more about this technique as far as I remember....

A product called Dovaworm would also work. There is a round of the Camellanus worms going at the moment. Just go to your nearest vet and ask them about a the Levamisole. They should give it to you. It's not too expensive. I lost all my Apistogramma hongsloi because of it... Diagnosed too late to help.

    Good luck dude...

    Hi
Yes it is long, string and white and as soon as I took the fish out of the water to examine it closer it broke off and turned brown

How did it get into my tank?
I have not put any new fish in it in a long time

They can live for a while. It's only when the infection becomes severe, that they show signs of sticking out the fish's anus... By this time, it's mostly too late, but not impossible to cure. The fish will need some high quality foods to help them through the next stage of recovery. The worms use hooks to dig into the intestines, so the tearing in the intestines will need to heal up properly before the fish are healthy again.

Should be able to get both from the Vet. Levimasole is liquid and IIRC is 5ml per 40l.

Apparently 2.5ml per 40l is sufficient

Chat to your vet about Levimasole HCL and DMSO. Apparently, DMSO is very helpful in getting the fish to ingest the L-HCL, rather than relying on it to ingest via food.

That's the route I took for my tank. Although the Apistos and Rummies in my tank didn't make it, my Discus survived the ordeal without any major issues

I think you should not rush into some worm treatment. I think this has to do with feeding. What are you feeding? Only flakes and granulates or are you feeding anything that contains roughage. Do you feed frozen bloodworm now and again? If you would feed some of this the faeces would not be so stringy in all likelihood. Also try not to overfeed as this could definitely cause the problem.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    HI Dirk
I feed that tank mostly Granulates and every now and then I will feed them bloodworms or brine shrimp..... could it be that I have moved from tetras product to a cheaper food for the last few months?

Considering the source that you got the fish from, there is a very good chance its Camallanus. He had a major infection in all his tanks

Yes I know that is why I really think it is that.... bur I will have a look to day and get the deworm stuff to day and then maybe take out the infected fish and treat them if they get better then I will treat the rest of the tank as well.

    OK,

if you guys say that there is a history of Cammalus at the source from where these fishes come then I would also agree that you should treat the fishes.

Use the Dovaworm if you can. Soak some dried food in it and feed the fishes with it. Obviously if the fishes are not eating any more then you have a problem.

I would VERY STRONGLY recommend that all fishkeepers stear clear of DMSO, it is really not good stuff. It smells like stinky potatoes and everything around your aquarium starts stinking as well and it draws into the silicon rubber as well. On my bottle in my lab from Merck it warns you and says: "Irritating to eyes and skin. In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and seek medical advice".

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

    Thanks Prof
Do I crush the Dovaworm and then use say blood worms by letting them defrost and them sprinkling the dovaworm over it and freeze it again then feed to them or how do I do it?

This I can confirm. Had to do a massive water change and clean out both display and sump because the stench was unbearable. Personally i'd rather do that then loose my Wild X's.

The vet I got it from used this method on a guppy breeding operation up here with brood stock that needed saving from Camallanus. After trying various methods, this seemed to have the best results. Especially after prolonged infection and the fish not eating anything

Dovaworm is sold in a small bottle and it is a yellow-coloured fluid. Take some dried food, or some bloodworm that you have thawed, put it into a tablespoon and put about 1 ml or as much as the dried food will absorb onto the food. For bloodworm leave this for 15 minutes and then feed, for dried food feed immediately.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk
