    Hi all
Know I must be studying, but the gray matter need some break.
For quite a while I have been contemplating starting a worm farm to get rid of kitchen scraps and produce fertilizer for plants, believe me in Oudtshoorn fertilizer and organic matter is seriously needed. Just thought of it last night - Hey there is some good nice juicy food for my fish there, and I can control their diet.
    Any thoughts, or suggestions ?

Visit and organic market. There is bound to be some lunatic there selling "red wriggler" cultures to start your own wormery. These are NOT red wrigglers (which are much smaller than the worms we are used to) but the normal garden variety earthworm.

    Best of luck.

Organic market, Oudtshoorn - you must be kidding.
Yes I have tried the local garden variety, they don't work. I read they use two foreign species. Need to mail order them.

I'm sure Outshoorn has an organic market... Ask around. Else, you may need to take a drive out to Knysna...

I doubt they really use the foreign species for the simple reason that the Dept of Agriculture wouldn't let them. Because earthworms come with soil they also come with nematode worms and other plant pathogens...

The so called "red wrigglers" I have seen at the Hermanus Organic market were normal garden variety earthworms (though I could be wrong) and they will work just as well. Just chop them up... yum, yum :eating: It helps if you freeze the eeky things first. They easier to chop and don't leave as much a mess. This is important if you have a wife.

White/grindal worms are high in fats too. Feed every now and then as a treat unless you actually intend to kill your fish. Work some shell grit or dolomite into the substrate to guard against pH crashes which will kill all the worms.
