What I have read says brown algae occurs in low light conditions.

That's algae - are you using ferts for live plants or overfeeding perhaps? My solution for algae was always to add something that would eat it - a few ancistrus should clear that up in no time. The only algae that I have issues with is BBA - nothing eats that D:

lights on at about 6AM off at about 8h30PM.. i have another tank running same time but different lights..

does it go by itself? i added a chinese algae eater to do some vacuming hoping it will help.. i wasn't too keen on the CAE as they become useless and territorial later on but didn't have much of a choice.. they work hard when they little.. cheap option, ottos were 50 bux a pop, got this one for 10!!

There's your problem. Your lights are running far too long. You don't have enough plants in there to absorb extra nutrients etc. Cut back your lighting periods and the Algae should stop taking over. I had the same thing in my old setup, because I also kept my lights on all day. But then I started to leave the lights off during the day and only switching on when I got home at 16h30. And even then the lights ran till 21h00.

My algae went away after the first week.

does that not mess around with the fish day/night cycle at all? and would it be enough "light time" for a planted tank? my second tank is more heavily planted..
i will give it a try tho thanx

Diatoms, normal with a new tank should go away on its own once the tank is mature.

As singu said... it's new tank syndrome... Diatom algae. Not a true algae... but all new tanks go through it. Relax, chill, and ignore it. It will go away. And PLEASE don't try scrub it off... it just spreads and makes it worse. Just leave it.

Now go read some of the beginner articles... there's some good info on lights in there. Your lights are on far too long. You will get other algae problems soon.
