Hey guys. I've noticed my ancistrus has these small white spots on him. Any ideas what it could be ? 21848ef4847950397076f8a15b7d5b2f.jpgc72934925b04a3b58dbdd980111054c1.jpg

It's a little difficult to see on the image... are these spots very different from the body patterning?

If you're concerned it might be disease, keep an eye on behavior. External afflictions are often associated with scratching, flicking, frequent movement, and sitting in front of a current (e.g.: filter outlet).

Some can be a bit spotty at times especially when new. Can also be a stress indicator. How long have you had it and what are you feeding it?

Hard to be 100% sure from your photo but there is a a skin parasite that Plecs are susceptible to.
My GN gets it now and then.
A course of Esha 2000 cures it quite quickly.
There must be a similar product available in SA

Interesting... any idea what kind of parasite that is @Reedfish?

I haven't seen Esha around S.A, but after a bit of digging, it's primary components appear to lean toward antibacterial, although it has some broad spectrum stuff in it as well. To put it simply, it's a really tough general tonic. I don't know if we have any direct analogues to that product, besides the typically weaker general tonics I've seen around.

There was info in one of my books
Can't recall if it was one of my specialist Pleco (I have 2 or 3 Aqualog and a few other publications), or one of my books on fish diseases
Will have a look one evening when I have time

I find the Esha products to be very good

The above one is still very small. Too soon for bristles.

Hi there everyone. Thanks for all the replies, I have been monitoring him and the spots have cleared up. He is still being his normal self and is busy sucking on a cucumber as we speak. Thank you all

I am not sure what his gender is yet, but I do not want to refer to him as 'it' so I refer to him as a him until he is old enough to find out

Give him some baby marrow as well. More nutrition than cucumber.

What other veggies could I give him? I know I can give zucchini but I was wondering if there was anything else?

Spinach, kale, romaine lettuce, peas, carrots and green beans are suitable. I feed algae wafers and baby marrow.
