White spot....

Hi all. Hope everyone is well.

Well long story short. I haven't had white spot since I first got neons ( about 18 months ago) and I didn't have my planted tank up and running.
On Sunday I bought 3 angels and a large talking catfish, didn't quarantine them because I had some white clouds occupying the Q tank.
The tank has many plants. It is a 250L 4ft tank with 3ft sump. I treated yesterday with 10ml of Interpets Anti white spot, and another 10ml today.

Fauna: 7 large harliquens
7 Colombian tetras
3 hoplos
1 feather fin
1 hi-fin pleco
3 talking cats.
1 spiny eel that been MIA for the last 2 weeks
and lots of vallis and other plants.

I will do a large (50%) water-change on Friday.
The 3 angels I bought appeared to be fine, but on Mon they had little white spots on their pectoral fins. My other fish seem fine though.

Any advice anyone?

Oky si what you firstley want to do is put your heat very high..The heat will mame the white spots pop like a zit,its grose...secondly go and buy tetra general tonic,before you trhough the general tonic in,remove all your plants...3 days and your fish will be alot better..

Ok, this is not quite correct... The heat will NOT make them pop like zits... It just speeds up their life cycle. Makes the cycsts fall off the fish quicker, which allows you to then treat the organism while it is free swimming stage.

Secondly, don't remove the plants. Rather remove the fish from the aquarium and treat them in a separate tank. This is the reason a good quarantine system should be in place. Although, I preach QT tanks, I hardly use them myself. I should get into the habit though...

Ok, @Firefly - This is what you should do:

1 Raise the temp in your tank to around 30 degrees. This will speed up the cysts into becoming free swimming. Once they are free swimming, then you can treat with an ich medication. Just be careful. Read the instructions on any meds before adding to your tank. Preferably use a QT tank. You can also add salt to the tank. (Unless it's planted). I think the levels were 1 tbl spoon per 20L... But let's perhaps first ask @azurekoi - For exact details.

 

Thanks for the info. I will raise the temp soon. I don't think I can move the fish because if the parasite is in it's free-swimming phase, won't all the fish have it eventually? I read somewhere that fish can develop and immunity to it. I will check on them again tomorrow because the lights are all out already. Not going to try the salt method because I do have plants.

 

metronidazole works brilliantly. 7mg/lt every 3rd day for 3 treatments.

I can say I used Prof's remedy and it work. Flagyl, 7mg/lt. Do not remove anything. I bought Acuzole 200mg and 100mg tablets and will never be without it again. It is schedule 6, so you do need a prescription. (Speak to your Vet or Doctor) Repeat after 3 days. See other thread, as indicated above and yet some others if you would do a search. And yes, it is very cheap.

Oh yes, make sure you eradicate the whole lot the first time. (Do not skip the repeat treatments, even if symptoms is gone after first treatment) This is not to be repeated too often, as it is hard on the fish kidneys or something...

Try the Prof's method as indicated to you by Valenshki and TomK, works like a shot and you do not need to remove anything. Valenshki has the dose spot on, so go right ahead.

The does of interpets seems to have helped greatly. I upped the temp, and we have had a serious heat wave. Only 2-5 on some angels. Other fish still seem fine. Will update on Sunday after WC.

 

@Firefly, if I may ask. Why are you not trying Prof's remedy?

 

It was not that I did not want to try the Prof's method. I had just treated before starting the thread, and did not want to treat with two different medications as this could have affected something else.

So the week turned out to be terrible. I have lost all 7 of my angels, 2 harlequins, 1 Colombian tetra and my talking catfish that was 10cm.
I did a 25% water change, have lowered the tamp and will keep a close eye on the tank now.
I thought that the high temp could have killed some of my fish. It was around 28'C. I also added 5 rooibos teabags to try and get some tannins in the water to help the fish with stress.

So now I have to wait for the tank to settle again. Definitely going to quarantine the rest of my fish before I put them into my tank.

 

I doubt that 28 degrees will kill your fish like that.

What is your NO2 NO3 NH3/4, and your pH?

Is the White Spot still visible?

 

NO2 is less than .3mg/l and pH is 7.5
I don't test NO3 or NO4
