    Hi Guys,

i got a small tank with 4 molly's and the usual stuff you get from pet store, if i check on the calculator is said its a 15L tank, i have a small filter that sucks on to the glass and that also puts air in the aquarium, then some white gravel and some fake plants and a heater, my tank is on 26degrees Celsius and the PH is 7,

after i got the tank i started reading about aquariums and i found they say my tank is way to small for molly's there is only one black molly female left, i do a 20% water change every week but it seems my molly is dying it has like a white fungus like thing on its head and just stays at the bottom of the tank, i added aquarium salt to try and improve the water quality for the molly,

any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Yup, the tank is too small.

Sounds like the tank is not cycled.
Do some reading on cycling a tank and the nitrogen cycle in general

The filter needs to build up the bacteria that will process the waste.
In the mean time, I would do a 20% change /day. With tap water treated with a declorinator.

Also, a treatment for fungus will hopefully save the fish.
Do you have a fish shop nearby?

Hi Reedfish, i cycled the tank for a month, and the molly has been in there for about 2-3 months,

i will do the water change as you said,

i have a petstore about 500m from my house

i have an old 120L tank but have nothing to put in such a large tank

    Ah, ok.
But I think with such a small volume of water, the filter can't cope.

Definately do more frequent water changes.
And see if the lfs has something for the fungus.

When it gets well (hopefully), take it back to the lfs.
And get something more suitable. Maybe a Betta, but not much you can keep in such a small tank

Now you have a reason to get something bigger. :)

If you are planning on using it.

Simplest way would be to take a small amount of media from the existing filter and put it in the new one.

Need to keep it "fed" while the bacteria get established

    Hi guys,

    The molly died,

have set up the the 100l tank and so its brand new "basically" used dechlorinated water and got the PH to 7 and has been sitting 2 days now with heat at 27 degrees Celsius,

what works best a fish less cycle or a cycle with 1 or 2 guppy's?

    Regards

    @Klipkraal,

Sorry to hear about the molly.

Transfer the media from the existing filter to the new one.
And slowly stock the tank. Need to give time for the beneficial bacteria to build up.

You can also use Seachem Stability - works great for a new tank. (I personally use pure ammonia to start and add Seachem stability)

If you want to try cycle with fish (old school), danio's do well...

If you use the mature media from the existing filter, no need to cycle from scratch.

I always wondered - how long can disease survive in the water column without fish? If you use filter media from a tank that had fungus, wont it also be then carried over to the new tank?

    Thank you guys,

i used the same filter but cleaned it properly cleaned everything that went into that tank properly to make sure i don't carry over any disease that there might be, ill go to the LFS and go get a danio or to and monitor for a few weeks, i honestly don't even know how they look but you guys should know more than me,

i will also go to pet masters over the weekend and get a proper water test kit to make sure everything is a okay

    Thanks for the help guys

How do you clean your filter? Do you rinse it in tap water?

Caz its one of those suck on glass filers that have a pump in with like a sponge filter inside, i washed it with clean tap water and then used boiling water in a bucket and left it there for about 10 min, then took it out and rinsed thoroughly with dechlorinated water, i did that with everything that went into the new tank,

silly Q once i filled the tank everything is filled with little air bubbles plants glass pipes everything and some of it went away but sum still stuck there did i do something wrong?

Ok, so all beneficial bacteria will be gone and you will have to start the cycle process over. Just remember that in the future never to rinse the media under tap water as the chlorine will kill the bacteria and you will basically always have an un-cycled tank... I normally just rinse my media out in the bucket with the water I just drained from the tank... If you still have the bufget for it, get some Seachem Stability...
