    Hi

So I noticed on my tank that my water start's to look cloudy bout a day or 2 before my water change. Upon further inspection I noticed that it's actually the glass that has this white film like build up on the inside which is obstructing the view .. today I cleaned the glass and water was crystal clear again.

I've attached a pic to show what I'm talking about. Any idea what this is and how to avoid?

If this is only at the top where the water line is, its probably calcium buildup from hard water, only way around it is soft water or regular scrubbing

@oupoot unfortunately it's under the water. I dropped a bit so I can get the picture my pH is about 7.5 which are ideal for African cichlids

It can be the beginning of algae forming or protein from food

I have this in my tanks too from heavy feeding
I have the magnetic glass cleaner and just wipe the glass with it when necessary between water changes

Yes it’s probably just biofilm and / or diatom algae.

I do feed heavy and I only noticed this after changing to Tetra cichlid sticks so it could be food related.

I have a magnetic cleaner but it has like valcro on the inside so I'm afraid that may scratch the glass. Maybe I'm just paranoid haha. I'll start using it.

I use a white magic eraser sponge and some spots wipe out greenish so algae is possible too

You could scrape the glass with a credit card type card, taking care not to catch sand which could scrape the glass

The magic eraser is working. It's just that between water changes the build up is quite a bit. Hence I'm looking at how I could slow it down or stop its growth. I'm gonna not feed the Tetra cichlid sticks for a week and see if that makes a difference for a start

Anyone uses a sun sun 704b or 304b cannister filter?

Looking at getting one as soon as tomorrow. Just not sure if they're any good. Also had a few questions on them.

They both have UV sterilisers so that would assist with my issue of algae on the glass

It's a bacterial bloom you have there. Excess nutrients so a uv wont solve the problem. You need to up the filtration capacity in terms biological media.

Remove the sponge and carbon and add bio media add an sponge to the intake. But find bio material that has a huge surface area. Also seed the media for 2 weeks to give dit a good boost.

Okay I will do this soon. Just received the filter. Going to set it up as is and get my hands on more media. Currently in my old filter I have 1kg ceramic rings and sponge. It's an overhead box with rain bar

I also went to check the tank at night with a torch on the side while I looked through the front. Lots of fine particles in the water which I'm guessing added to that. The floss should help with this

So the cannister filter is set up and running alongside the old filter .. left the spray bar out so I get better surface agitation. The flow on my tank seems to be really great.

It really was such a mission to get it started but worth it in the end.

1 question though... How long do I need to run the uv
