    Hi Guys,
I have recently drilled my tank and am busy setting up a sump system. Last week I bought a 5000 LPH Eiheim 2364 pump to use in my sump. Tank is 1000 litres and a standard 4foot sump.
This pump, which I was told is very quite, is NOT QUITE at all - in fact I hate it !!!!
I am going to have to change it.
What, in your opinion is THE VERY QUIETEST MAKE OF PUMP ON THE MARKET - THAT WILL DO 4-5000 LPH
I have been told by Altum to look at Sicci (sp?) pumps, and one or two others- cannot remember their names right now
I just want to get a general opinion of what's the quietest - according to members experience, - my tank is in my TV lounge and I simply cannot have that loud humming noise.

I got a reef octopus 3500 lph in my lounge doesnt mak a sound

What is making the noise ? Have had a couple of eheim pumps and none of them made any noise, is it vibrating ? Maybe check impeller and shaft ? Very strange. Sicce is italian and if the eheim is noisy the sicce will also be. Maybe have a look at tunze pumps aswell.

So How's your Eheim performance ... Quieter now?
Your particular model isn't common in SA

    FYI
For past 5years or so, reputable German "manufacturers" actually purchase and offer rebadged, face-lifted Italian-made pumps as a significant part of their range.
These include some Tunze, and Eheim

Putting in a Dophin P3500 in my new sump/tank next week. I believe they are quiet and reliable from what I have heard, will let you know what I experience.

I'm also looking for a pump for my new tank in the living room, so any advice would be appreciated :D

Don't know if you get the Rena range in SA, but they are pretty quiet. I have one.

From personal experience, I have found the cheapo ones tend to be more noisy.
The more expensive ones are probably better made and tend to be quieter.

@Williamh - I reduced the size of the return pipe to the tank - I used rigid 40mm pipe to begin with ( thinking a big pump needed that size diameter pipe), and replaced it with 20mm flexiable hose - HUGE difference that made - now the Eheim is running so quite it is an absolute pleasure and that was thanks to @Altum for his advice to reduce the return pipe size ! I still cannot actually believe the difference it made. So between having the Eiheim pump and a 'Durso" type overflow - life now is a total pleasure in my T.V.Room

@eros111 - If I may ask, where did you get you Eheim from?
I'm looking at a pump for around +-1400l/hr from either Eheim or Sicce.

Funny thing about pumps is that they need some pressure in the volute or they tend to cavitate. Another way to solve the problem is to put a valve on the delivery side to throttle it, it is also a good idea to start a pump with the delivery closed so it builds pressure then slowly open it. This stops cavitation and helps push the air out first which causes the noise and excess ware and tear on bearings. and ur suction should be atleast the same size or bigger than ur delivery depending on distance of suction head.

So to be clear it wasnt a pump fault but rather a bad setup then. Well im glad you got it sorted before you went and bought another pump and landed up with the same problem. I havent worked on small aquarium pumps before but the info i gave you is what works on the plants (Industry) and ive had similar story with my irrigation pump trying to pump water from far away. Its very interesting to see what all goes on in the pump on a micro level.

Hi, don't want to start a new thread, I also have an irritating vibrating noise coming from the standard Boyu pump in my new TL-550 aquarium.
2014-08-31 13.46.10.jpg I took the pump out this weekend and ran it in the bucket i used to do a water change and there was no noise.
Can it be the UV light at the top end of the pipe?

    Any ideas/help would be appreciated.

It could be that your pump is cavitating - caused maybe by your return pipe being too big - what size is the pipe? See the thread above posted by ALLY and might be exactly the way to stop your pump making noise by fitting a valve at the end of the pipe just before it enters your tank and turning it closed a little until the noise stops - hope this helps you - let us know what happens
