which ammonia test kit?

sorry if theres already a thread for this, but which ammonia test kit would you recommend/are you using?

How essential is having one?

If you are worried about Ammonia - get a Seachem Ammonia Alert "tag". You stick them inside your tank and they show whether the Ammonia levels are safe or not.
I'd suggest you invest in a bottle of Seachem Stability or MicrobeLift Special Blend and dose your tank. That should eliminate ammonia, nitrites and nitrate issues for the first month.

Would then also suggest you get Seachem Matrix and put it in your filter. Then you will probably never have to monitor ammonia, nitrates or nitrites.

i see people are chuffed with seachem products.

 

It's coz they are so good... Just watch out sometimes they are to good and you overdose with them... Always under-dose a tiny bit in my experience.

 

Big fan myself and the MicrobeLift Special Blend is also cool. Seachem Stability cycles your tank in a week, need to add some daily. I use it conjunction with Seachem Matrix.
MicrobeLift cycles it in a month and you add some weekly.
