Hi, i am looking for VERY white fine sand for my nano.
I have been to builders and jungle aquatic today and a nursery and noone has it. and the BIG question is
Where can i get silica sand in JUB.. north preferably? i want it because it is the whitest sand i am aware of. i would like to go to mauritius to collect some white sand but i dont think that is the most cost effective solution.
    thanks

Can always opt for play sand from Reggies if you want to, relatively white and fine

We have about 1500t at work. Pitty I am from Lichtenburg. Shout if you don't get some. I could always courier. You can have it for free, just need to wash it properly.

You can always try your closest golf course. They use it in the bunkers.

@themasterofSAURON Try Speck Pumps. They sell a coarse 3-5mm (cost me R110.00 for 40 or 50kg?) and a fine (sorry - not sure on size but it is fine - maybe 1mm or smaller at the same cost).

ok, i have sourced sand, but i would like to know what would be better for plants, a very fine sand (play sand from toys r us) or would a coarser sand ( pool filter from builders) be better due to more circulation of water around the roots. I know my Kuhlis want the play sand :p but i need to think about the plants aswell. or does it not really matter. i like the idea of really fine sand as that is what i would expect teh sand to be like in the natural habitat.

I found the finer sand was more detrimental to my plants roots. Roots near the surface of the substrate was ok, but roots that made it deeper in the fine sand slowly rotted away.

ok, @Zoom thanks, do you think that the slightly larger PFS is still fine enough ok for the corydoras and Kuhli loach to exhibit their natural behaviors?

I had success with normal PFS and my Cory's. The danger is that some PFS is rather sharp and could damage their barbels. If you can afford it, the Microbelift Biologically Alive substrate is pretty good, and because it's so light, the Kuhli's and Cory's will display great burrowing behaviour.

Your next alternate may actually be washed river sand.

My Cories are fine with PFS - barbels intact.
