Where to get shells & shellies?

Hi all:bigsmile: ive decided to turn my 55L tank into a Tanganyikan setup i have a feather fin catfish and a spiny eel i plan to obtain some brichardis and lemon cichlids. i currently have an underground filter 5 plants corse gravel and a bunch of rocks. i plan to chage to silica sand and a sponge filter.
I have a few questions though
1 can my plants stay???
2 can the eel stay???
3 is all the above correct for a Tanganyikan tank setup???

 

A 55L is too small for those fish. There are no aquatic plants in lake Tanganyika, but you could get away with vallisneria.

ug filter and sponge filter might not be enough if you get tang ciclids. feather fin cat gets 30 cm long, i got one in my 2 ft tank and it more than doubled in size in 3 months.

 

What filter do u suggest i get??? Im moving the featherfin when he gets to big and i read up on brichardis they're ok with a 40L so i think 55L should be ok. when the lemons outgrow this tank ill move them to and start again with juveniles.

Where to get shells for shellies?

Hi i want to get some shellies, but the only shells i can find are the garden snails shells (too small) and a couple of large snail shells (to Big) with 7cm opening and to big to move around. were planning a trip to the beach soon if i wash well can i use those shells? if you know anything/anywhere else i could try let me know.:bigsmile::bigsmile::bigsmile:

 

What exactly is a shelly?

 

Its a trade name for shell dwellers from lake tanganyika,

Garden snail shells are fine(I have used them and still do)they have got to be cleaned out thoroughly bcoz you don't want any pieces of the critter to start rotting in your tank,apple snail shells can also be used

 

arnt garden snail shells too small??? the ones in our garden are only 1x2cm
