Need to pick up a substrate for a 3ft tank and some plants. I was thinking java ferns, anubias, Amazon sword etc as well as a floating plant. Also looking for a good place to buy a decent substrate at a good price. Advice on what plants to go for is also welcome as this will be my first planted tank venture. Willing head further afield as well.

Jungle Aquatics in Fourways has some plants, but when i was there a couple of weeks ago they weren't looking too great.

Aqua Empire usually has a pretty good selection, but they are in the process of moving/have recently moved their shop, so i'm not sure what their stock is like. Their new shop is in Randpark Ridge.

betterweather.co.za seems to have really good looking plants, as does Plantae. If you go to APSA.co.za and search for Plantae you can check out their plant list.

In terms of substrate, most of the available stuff is either ADA Aquasoil or the cheaper stuff: Langa. For a 3 foot tank you'll probably need about 2 big bags of each. ADA Aquasoil will probably be about R1.6k, while Langa will be closer to R800. Both work very well. Both of these can be found at most decent aquarium shops.

In terms of floating plants, there's not really much around unless you're willing to deal with the annoyance of duckweed.

I have some water lettuce I can give you. No charge. All you need is one. They multiply like crazy. Will also give you some fissidens and one or two other things. Let me know when and i will check what i have when the time comes. I live in Randpark ridge, work in fourways.
    No charge, pay it forward.

I have lots of Duck weed. LOL but as @fux940510 already mentioned you need to be able to deal with the annoyance of it. I dont mind it and find it beneficial for some of my tanks. You are welcome to a packet full also grows like crazy and works well with water lettuce.

Tank is coming along. Not as much growth as I hoped for by now but the tank is looking great. Hoping to add one or two more plants to full it out a bit more.
