Hey guys could you please ID whats on my amazon swords leaves. It only appears to be on a few of them. Its almost like a red brown layer on top of the leaf (like velvet). How can I solve this?

    Tank stats:
    70l
    2XT5 10000k lights (15 hours)
    Daily Seachem Excel
    Bi-weekly seachem flourish
    Sera Florenette A root tabs

i can add more light if this will help, using CFL.

@ivan I dont think its bba/ dead bba, as bba looks like little fibers etc. This is like a velvet layer its never raised. Unless this is another form of bba.

I wouldnt add light. Not at al. If anything, Id cut your photo period almost in half to 8 hours max.

@Zoom ill try that out. I had this in my old tank over the past 2 years, on a few of the amazon leaves some are absolutely perfect green some get this... what ever it may be. I now have it in my new tank as i brought the amazon over and its also on the a. crispus and java fern. I took out the leaf and scratched hard and could not even make a mark on it. Could the plants not have a deficiency?

I have looked at many different types of algae and none seem to fit. Any ideas?

Definitely reduce your photoperiod. Set up your lights with a timer and allow a period of darkness around the middle ....siesta period....for 2-3 hours. Algae hate this dark period. Have around 10 hours of illumination per day + the 2-3 of darkness.

oh man! let me know if you find a way to get rid of this. I have the exact same stuff growing?? appearing?? on my slower growing plants. I scrub it off and it just keeps coming back. my tank is low-tech and medium-light with a photo period of only 4-5 hours a day. the SAEs arent touching it

its BBA!!!! squirt it with excel

BBA will apear in different "strengths" but that is BBA no doubt... well imo anyway.

check KH fluctuation,ph and if you using gas make sure your ditribution/criculation is good.

BBA does no need to have a beard..i can be in different "strengths" dependant on your tanks water parameteres..

BBA's other identifiyer is red brush algae so ya RED is it other colour.. do a google image search on red brush algae, you will see what i mean..

    good luck..:top:

What is the most effective on period followed by an off period?

If lights must be on for 10 hours a day does that mean it must be on 10 hours and then off for a few hours and then on again for 10 hours?

What is the total lights on time?

What is the total lights off period or how many short hour off times must you have

I want to get clarity on this please

Ok let me clear things up.
    During one day(24hours)
The total time my lights are on for is 11 hours.
They switch ON for 6 hours.
Then they switch off for 3 hours.
Then they switch on for 5 hours.
After these last 5 hours they switch off for the rest of the evening effectively 13 hours.
SO in summary they switch ON at 6:00 OFF at 11:00 ON at 14:00 OFF at 20:00 till the next morning when they switch on at 6:00 again the tank is spotless no algae what so ever

I would always have this on a few leaves. The tank is now absolutely spotless, the plants are really in the best condition I have ever seen them.
