 thought he was talking to me. Yeah you only need to pre-treat the water before you add it to the tank. I add my drops to my water in bucket and let it stand for a few minutes, I then pour it into the tank very slowly. It takes me like about 5 minutes to poor the water in slowly. I don't want to stress my Tigers out unnecessary:)

hi, i think what @Zoom was talking about was the waste of the chemicals, and he's absolutely correct as it is a waste, but in the case of using prime in particular, it can also be beneficial to overdose for the entire tank volume occasionally as doing this helps to eradicate nitrites, nitrates and even ammonia..

@mydummyname - Here's the confusion - On the side of Tetra Nitrate Minus it recommends weekly dosing of x ml/l. On the side of Nutrafin Aqua Safe it has a weekly dosing to protect slime coat/remove chlorine and chloramine and Nutrafin Cycle (I assumed more beneficial bacteria could only be good). I can honestly say that my tank has never had quality issues (up until the Ich the other day)

Apologies if I have the side of bottle notes incorrect but this is from memory.

I also treat my whole tank know and then do aid in the slime coat for the fishes. I also add Seachem Stability on a weekly or monthly basis. Sometimes I will add the amount for full tank after water changes or maybe just once a month.

For my penny's worth, I pre-treat WC water with Seachem Prime, and like most Pretoria residents I slightly overdose - like 1ml to 25L.
Then dose the entire tank with Bio Vital powder.

Anyone else use Bio Vital powder? I get the 2kg bucket (+/- R150.00) and it lasts like forever. Dose at about a level teaspoon per 100L.

    Blurb says:

Increases dissolved Oxygen by eliminating Bio-Chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD)
Helps eliminate suspended solids, bottom sediments and liquifies solid wastes.
Helps eliminate Ammonia, Nitrite, malodorous and toxic gasses (Hydrogen Sulfide).
Adds valuable minerals and helps stabilise pH
Promotes growth and increases survival rates
Reduces levels of heavy metals and pathogenic bacteria, thus preventing disease
Helps eliminate nitrates and pea-soup green water
Stimulates and enhances the biological filtration process.

These are not just idle claims either it really works!
I've been using this for the past year, and my fish look great. I've also had very few fatalities, and when one has occurred, it's usually been due to old age.
The water is a bit cloudy for a couple of hours after dosing, but soon clears to leave the water crystal clear.
Works like a bomb in my fishpond too.

    However
: Do not add salt or use in a system that contains any significant amount of salt!!

I also add the ubiquitous Rooibos tea, but more because I like the look than for any medicinal reason.

i'm very impressed with these claims, a few days ago there were one or 2 threads with people battling with murky water, something like this might have come in pretty handy in one of those cases...

For sure! I can vouch for that... And you don't have to buy a 2Kg bucket either. There are also smaller bottles available.

I'm not just touting this stuff, and I'm speaking under correction, but I understand our old friend @azurekoi was involved in its development.

well that is what forums are for, getting users experiences, with lots of people benefitting (hopefully from the information)

if @azurekoi was involved in it, i'd trust it for sure.

    +1 for the info.

I also used Aquarium Bio Vital with all my old tanks I had a couple of years ago, did not really have any issues when I used it.

    Fish where always looking good.

Just don't know if I want to add it to my existing tank what do you think @mydummyname?

Would you maybe think on using this on your tigerbarb tank?

i generally prefer to not not add chemicals to the tank, unless its really really necessary... so for now, its a no.

I also think so my tigers are so happy at the moment don't want to stuff around my water quality.
