So my 3ft tank has been standing empty for a while since all the occupants have been moved to my 4ft tank. I am keen to experiment with breeding fish in there. The first thing that came to my mind was to try get my sterbai cories to breed. I have had 5 of them for quite some time with no luck (ive heard they are tricky to get breeding) but perhaps with a dedicated tank it would be possible. Otherwise south american cichlids are always interesting. I guess my question is which sa cichlids would be able to change my mind and would be able to breed in a 3ft tank besides rams and apistogramma.

Hey Jagwa, Sterbai corys are not hard to breed but they do take a long time to reach maturity, maybe you havn't given them enough time? With a tank all to themselves they might surprise you. I have had my 4 Sterbai in a 135l tank for a few weeks now and within the last week and a bit they have given me plenty eggs but Ive only managed to get 11 to hatch so far. I wouldn't give up on them yet if I were you.

Best of luck with whatever you decide.

How about some of the smaller/medium sized Rainbows?

It is more worthwhile to breed the more rare or unusual species. You will probably find the more common species difficult to offload, and you will be left with hundreds of fry that you won't be able to move on.

@Reedfish, That actually sounds like a reasonable idea, do you know of any small rainbows besides the dwarf, threadfin and celebes?

I am going to try and breed some bronze corys in a 2ft tank. I currently only have a heater, two sponge filters, and some fine silica sand. Will be adding some hiding places though.
I read that corys spawn when it rains or when the water temp changes. Best of luck!
    Keep us updated.

I think there is a group of Rainbows called the Blue Eyes. I will have to check in my books when I get home this evening.
Not sure how freely available they are though.

    Ok,
I decided to go with cories for a breeding project. Was looking around in the tank and noticed eggs :) need to find my camera for proof but they managed to do it without me even doing the recommended drop in water temp procedures. All im feeding them is block of blood worms a day. Now i have to find some food the fry.

BBS will be the best for the first few weeks, then you can start mixing it up with Micro worms.
