I use cheap glass thermometers, but finger test regularly between tanks. I never trust the thermostats of any heater

2x Jager 300w keep them at 23 and tank stays at 26*c with lighting. Had power outages for 6hrs and it barley goes down 2*c at night. During day power outages dont affect temp unless its really cold out.

Hi @Jwh... interesting that you actually switch off heaters in summer

I have been following this thread and thought it would be nice if everyone also gave an idea of their overnight temperatures in their area as these are very different from Province/area to area

Where I stay, the summer overnight temperatures still usually drop to 16.. 17.. regularly in summer. Would I still be able to switch off my heaters?

My tanks go up to 29-30 mid summer, which is way higher than i would like, they may loose 1 - 2 degrees during the night, large tanks take a very long time to cool down.

3ft Set to 22... achievable in winter, however it rises to 24 in summer. I leave the heater on incase of temp drops at night.
Others are set to 24... the nano's unfortunately get up to 26 - 28 in summer so need to have a fan blowing over them to help cool them down.

Ok..Hahah.. but your tank is a monster!!! will take forever to cool down!!!

Jokes aside.. my tanks are big so shouldnt go too cold very quickly... I guess one would have to try ( which I have been scared to do...) and switch off and see what happens.
I will give it a try maybe later into October

It also makes a big difference in cost for electricity...keeping the heater at about 26degrees & putting it up to 28degrees increases the cost to about 5 extra units per day...this is now in my house/environment

Only use heaters in winter, set at 23 deg (from about May to Aug)
If the summer night time temp drops it won't be by much.

Surely there's no real benefit to turning your heaters off in summer? If your temp is above what the heater is set at (taking the normal offset into account), then the heater won't turn on (this of course is the crucial assumption). Even if your heater did turn on, it would only be at a minimum temperature (again, i assume your heater is set for minimum acceptable temperature) and it would not be for a long time anyway, and therefore would not be using power. It does however safeguard you against the rare possible drop in temperature below what you would consider safe.

My point is that in summer, your heater's thermostat should keep it turned off most of the time, so unplugging it actually saves very little power, if any (this assumes that heaters, when off, draw very little or no current, and therefore do not consume power - I'm not aware of them drawing any current when the thermostat switches the heater off).

So based on my assumptions, I keep it plugged in, it's got nothing better to do than be in the tank and it provides me with a little bit of insurance on those sudden cold snaps that might come through once a summer.

I reckon your heater might be underpowered for your tank size. Get yourself another one, place them at opposite ends of the tank.
You run the risk of the heater overworking and eventually fizzling out :( Having two, the temperature will be easier to control and more accurate and if one fails, you'll have a backup.
