What should I do with the eggs?

Hey. I've now got 2 pots full of eggs from 2 pairs of convicts. do i leave them there or should i move the pots to an empty cycled tank? I'm not sure if the parents have a role to play. but it still looks like one female is laying the eggs so i will give it some time so that the male can do his thing.

 

Hi Franna, I have quite a 'naturalistic' way of looking at things, and like to leave the eggs with the parents and let nature take its course! Thats of course for my Apistos, but of course, convicts too are cichlids, so have similar parenting skills.

If the eggs were to be taken away, then the parents will not learn to parent. It may cost a brood or four, but I think its important to allow them to learn?

Thats my opinion, and some people would probably take the eggs out to gain maximum profits from sales, but Convicts are not very lucrative at the best of times!! Too many around!!

I guess it depends on what your goals are? Do you want to sell, or is your goal just to raise some babies??

Franna, I agree with Big G. Leave the pots and eggs, for the parents to do their thing.
If you want to use the fry as food for other fish, you can remove the eggs, and raise it separately.
Remember, by doing this, the fry and their siblings will eventually loose their good parental care instincts.
This is exactly how they raise fish in th east!
The fish you get, don't have the instinct anymore, as they are bred for maximum profit.
Decide early what you want to do with offspring!

Ok i will do so. I have no intention of selling convicts and The other tank is going to be used for Malawi's. so the less convicts the better actually. ok two questions. how long will it take until I see wigglers. And would convicts work in an mbuna tank?

 

EDIT:i would say another 2 or 3 days until you have wrigglers.it will take the fry another 2 or 3 days to consume the yoke sac.
