I feed my fish a mix of Tetra Min and Ocean Nutrition flakes. I also occasionally give them frozen daphnia and bloodworm. But never non-fishy foods - until last night, when I experimentally dropped in a pea-sized piece of brown bread.

The barbs mobbed it (as expected - they will mob sawdust) but the tetras in particular went gaga for the scraps - moreso than their usual food.

The bread was commercial Albany bread with the usual chems in it, so I'm not keen on making a habit of it - but I am keen to add a bit more variety to their diet. What special oddball treats do you give your feesh?

My fish get quite a diverse diet. I believe the larger the variety of fresh foods, the better for them.

I'll often mince up small poritions of banana, blanched green veggies and pieces of fresh salmon for them. They absolutely love it and I feel it benefits the ecosystem.

I also feed mosquitoes that have met the underside of a pillow and larvae that I catch from a little pond outside. This food source is seasonal though :tt2:
I try make as much use of it as I can, insects are great for them.

I haven't tried this personally, but I heard of someone who fed her wild tropheus soft, cooked rice smashed into raw liver (yes, I know it sounds very controversial being Tropheus but she got them to spawn like crazy and had no health issues) She also fed in moderation.

mashed up green peas are great for fishes constipation or bloating, also mosquito larvae i catch outside, and most of the veggie loving fish love some cucumber or blanched baby marrow.. you can use a paper clip over the side of the tank, or similar to be able to remove it if they dont finish it. also always remove the uneaten food

Only problem there is it can get very messy and not easy to remove excess from the tank

I dont give mine anything non fish related. I have multiple types of flake and granulate foods, then supplement with vinegar eels and mosquito larva as well as frozen bs and cyclops.
