Hey. I'm being a noob again but I've started a new tank about 2 weeks ago. to my suprize I found one baby fish in the tank. i did not buy this one. It looks like one of my bigger fish but i cant remember the names. there's only one baby fish so I want to know does this species only give birth 2 1 or 2 fish or if some of my other bigger fish just ate the rest? a Photo of the alleged parents is given .(Warm fresh water aquarium) excuse the dodgy photographic work it was dark and the auto focus had a hard time with them moving around.

Yup... Balloon molly... I definitely think Bill is a better name though.

They give birth to live young and the other fish in the tank will eat the young. Heck, the parents will eat their own young as well...

    Jip definitely a balloon Mollie...
I agree with Slagter, if there are no decent hiding spots then the fry will be eaten up before you even get to see them

Yes, and to get it this short someone hit a standard molly with a hammer until it got this short. I find it terrible that these fish are bred and are being sold here, they have a shortened life span and should actually be banned.

Just my personal opinion on this matter and this is not meant as an attack on you as a beginner, how could you know.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Correct a hammer is too cruel.

they usually put them in a bag and then squeeze them in a vice grip for about 2 days.
You'll notice that some are rounder than others, this is due to the inconsistancy of pressures due to the large amounts they do.

The vice method that Gilbert is referring to is equally cruel, and causes sever brain damage to the fish. That is why they are unable to recognize their own fry and see them as food.

    Sorry Frana,

We are giving you a hard time here.

There are a number of different fishes in which a mutation has occurred in which the whole backbone, the vertebral column is shortened and these have then been selectively bred to perpetuate this defect. It is definitely a defect and results in these fishes also having an abnormal swimbladder and a shortened lifespan. I really do not know why people in the East are so fascinated by fishes with these bone abnormalities. They then give these fishes the name "bubble" and you get bubble mollies, bubble platies and bubble Rams, all of which in comparison with the normal types really look defective and abnormal.

I do not believe that one should support such practices.

    Hope this clarifies the issue.

    Kind regards,

    Dirk

Why? Because people buy them. People who don't do research before investing in their new pets. People who get conned by the Pet Shop owners into buying this really cool balloon fish. People who are just starting out and don't know better...

Not their fault, but as with anything, research it first. You wouldn't buy a car without test driving it and reading some reviews on the web or a magazine, would you?

Nice Franna!! It would be Guppy fry though. Neons are not the easiest fish in the world to breed, but Guppies breed like rabbits.

Neons lay eggs, while Guppies also give birth to live young.
