Walking past my tank at midnight on my way to the tap, and sneeking a quick peek at the local wildlife is a surefire way to wake me all the way and set me to googling all kinds of crap.

So, what did I learn last night? I learned that guppies sleep while resting on the bottom of the tank and appear not to be alive and that they're actually fine and I dont need to call the docter in a panic.

I almost had a heart attack.

They should come with a warning label so noobs like me dont have panic attacks in the wee hours of the night.

:tt2: and that is also the reason why freshwater lobsters are not welcome in our tanks. Easy pray for the.

Haha, my oscars does the same, my big one even rests his head against the glass. Other times they just float around the surface on their sides. When I saw them floating for the first time my heart also missed a beat.

I'm sure some of us would have an heart attack, seeing things we don't know about.

Thanks for the tips, I've learnt something new now

    WHAT I LEARNED TODAY:

Diy co2 setup is a BAD idea in a nano tank where the gas cant escape the bottle fast enough because you only need a little for such a small tank.

It's still dripping from my kitchen ceiling.

Some of the mixture got into the tank. I did about a 40% wc because thats all the prepared water i had. Are my white clouds, guppies and cherry shrimps on their way to fishy heaven? The water is still cloudy.

I think the fish should be fine. Best will be to try and do a larger wc as soon as possible. What do you use in the mix

Firstly I'm not a scientist but I believe the baking soda will alter your ph, higher. Not sure how the sugar and yeast will affect the tank. Hope somebody else with more know how can chip in and help a bit

I'll just do wc's every day for a while and hope no one goes belly up. They still seem ok. Everyone came out for dinner.

It will. I used baking soda to raise the PH when it was too low.

Ok. So i added 1/4 tsp to the mix in a 2L bottle. I think about 2 or 3 tablespoons full of the mix made it into the tank. So thats very little right? The tank is 15 L.

No one is floating yet this morning. Thank goodness. No co2 for the plants today.

It's about a millilitre per litre of mix, shouldn't have a bad effect at all tbh

I mean using baking soda mixed in water as a agent to raise the ph in the water - did that once and it went from 6.2 to 8.2.

What I normally do is mix a packet of yeast into a 2L bottle and dissolve one cup of sugar into 1L of boiling water. Let the water cool down and then pour into the bottle. I only use yeast, sugar and water - I couldn't justify the waste of bottle contents so I added some grated ginger in as well and made alcoholic ginger beer. Lol. I've even attempted mulberry / blackberry wine this way too - wasn't too bad, very dry wine with a bitter note of fruit.

    Hahahahahaha! That is awesome!

Ye, i follow the same recipe, but add a pinch of BS in to keep it from making alcohol. The problem is just that my tank is so tiny, i have to really throttle the outlet, causing the pressure to build up in the bottle. Bit of a conundrum. I'm going to have to leave off with the CO2 until i can devise another plan. I need the co2 to be produced at a slower rate. I dont think putting in less sugar is the answer, as far as i understand that will only make it last for a shorter time period. Less yeast? Bigger bottle? I've tried adding a balloon into the line to act as a reservoir, but the problem is that the resistance in the balloon is less than the resistance of the little glass diffuser in the tank- which means that the balloon just blows up and nothing goes into the tank.

But I'm a clever girl, so watch this space...
