Well your current fish don't come from the same region in any case....

How many SD's are in that tank?

I'd look at a bigger tank before any new fish. But thats just me

Yer, your silver dollar will grow pretty large, and should be kept in a shoal of at least 6!! They are also known to chow/uproot/rip plants apart!!

It also wouldn't suprise me if a guppy or two dissapeared once the Silver Dollar gets bigger?? I know they are not supposed to be carnivourous, but the rule of 'if it fits in the mouth it get eaten' does often apply even with Veggies!! I've seen it happen!!

Personally I don't like keeping fish that big, purely because it then means I can only keep a few fish in such a tank!! I just don't have the space or money to set up a 2m tank to keep all the fish I'd like, so I stick to fish generally no bigger than 10cm max size, and then add one or two fish like my Sturisoma that can grow to around 20cm but is stick thin!

Maybe get rid of the Dollars and setup a nice planted Tetra tank?? There are some fantastically coloured Tetras out there!! And combining the right contrast of colours can lead to an awesome display tank!! The Guppys would also fit this biotope!!

    Cheers
    G!

I've kept Silver Dollars, they do enjoy a shoal but they can also quite happily think of themselves as a shoal member of something else, and are most useful as dither fish. Your plant selection will be quite limited/nonexistant however.

A large number of species are compatible with that group but optimally your guppies should be in harder, more alkaline water (not that they care too much) while the catfish and dollars would be happier with slightly acidic and soft conditions, so your selection is then limited to fish that don't mind conditions around neutral pH. In a 100L tank, you unfortunately can't keep too many more fish, though some medium-sized characins could work well. Do you currently have living plants in the tank?

I personally love hemigrammus caudovittatus (Buenos Aires/Rio tetra), other medium-sized ones such as Bleeding Hearts (though they may be a bit finicky without soft water, I don't know your water conditions), Black Widows which are really hardy, perhaps even Congo Tetras (since you already have African fish mixed with South American). Just a few suggestions. Dwarf cichlids are also fairly small and shouldn't cause problems.

Dasher, I think your current idea is the best.

It's better to start off knowing what you want and taking it from there.

Good luck with the tank and I look forward to seeing it develop.

Dasher, at the end of the day, you are the one who is going to be looking at this tank on daily basis and i'm positive that you want to be looking at something that you like...so decide what fish you can keep and bare in mind of the specs required for the fish you want...with that said, i trust you will make a decision...

I concur with JesseG. You know what you want, I'm sure the fish you have will be gladly accepted by a friend, or you could invest in more tanks over time. If we get to know what you like, we can suggest.

Check out bicolour or redfinned sharks, though only keep one of those because they love to rip each other apart. Many cichlids have darker bodies and pleasing colours, but do your homework when you decide on some you like the look of. I would recommend kribensis in this regard. Sorry if you have kept some of my suggestions, I don't know what you have kept in the past. Unfortunately many smaller peaceful fish have light bodies and bright fins, or bright bodies and transparent fins...

Hey Dasher, I know this fish doesn't have a dark body, but they sure are beautiful to look at. Have a look at the dwarf gouramie. They're mostly orange and blue (some species differ)

I think you could have a pair in the tank you've got. They don't bother the guppies either.

Dwarf gouramis are some of the few fish I have never had much luck with... I gave them plenty of hiding places, plants, slightly soft, acidic water, peaceful tankmates. They just didn't ever adjust properly. Funny that I can't keep them but I can keep a Silver Arowana happy.

I absolutely recommend Pearl gouramis. Hardy, peaceful and beautiful. How they look in an LFS doesn't do justice to how they could look in a well-planted aquarium.

Many fish are "carnivores" in that they won't eat plant matter readily, but most gouramis have really small mouths and won't bother your other fish. They are generally geared toward eating mosquito larvae and other invertebrates.
