Hi, i have recently started a new system and i planted some clippings of ambulia and myatta (spelling??) threre has been quite a bit of growth with both developing many roots. but the new growth is far lighter of a green color, almost whiteish green. what could the casue of this be? is it a lack of nutrients as i have not used any ferts or is it a lighting issue.

I suspect it is a nutrients issue, therefor i ask what the knowledeable members think of the MUCH cheaper daro ferts compared to the seachem flourish and excel products?

    Thanks

Bought some daro ferts while I was waiting to get Dirks ferts... couldn't see that they had any effect on the plants at all. But this was a while ago - before I would be willing to condemn them outright, I'd want to see someone taking a more scientific approach. ended up throwing the bottle away.

I can say that I saw immediate results from DSD though - still use em. Easy to dose, and cost effective too. But you're in JHB so you'd have to hurry up and beg Dirk to bring some to the expo. (presuming you're going!) I've also used the microbelift range recently and had v good results. hth

I'm currently using Sera root tabs and Seachem Flourish comprehensive and Seachem Flourish Excel, with reasonable growth.
But that's in a tank with inert substrate. In my other two tanks (Seachem flourite in one, Red jasper in the other) I haven't needed to add anything to get good growth.
So my advice would be a good substrate before you try out water column ferts.

Did not know Daro made ferts, what is in the bottle, they need to give you some idea.

Just the chips, it seems to be high in iron from what I could find on the net.
Mine are in the 3 to 5mm size.

Daro ferts dont have the chemical composition on the bottle (I think... Been YEARS since I used it) but I suspect it is just a mix of the basic mix of the some of the chems used in EI dosing.... Some Potasium based salts, some Iron etc.... and unlike plant fert products like those from Microbe Lift or Seachem,I doubt much research has been put into them....

@Whipme... the reason you only getting "reasonable growth" with using Seachem Comprehensive is it's low levels of Macro's (N,P,K)... by using the Macro Suplements with the Comprehensive, you get great growth (dont forget a carbon source though...)

I use dsd in main tank with AMAZING results, and Microbelift in other tank with similar results. Both very cost effective.

@DirkBellstedt is overseas at the moment presenting some papers.

I doubt he will be bringing any fertilizers up with him. I know he is getting back to CT literally a day or 2 before he has to fly out to JHB again, so time is limited.

Guys, ordering the DSD through Dirk is a completely painless experience. (note.. painLESS).

Simply request the order sheet, with which you should receive the information sheet as well. Place the order, pay, and within a few days the stock is at your post office ready for collection. Buying the DSD also works out a pile of money CHEAPER than if you were to take that hard earned blue bills to the LPS and buy some of the other stuff.

If any of you guys would like some reading material with regards to the DSD, please drop me a PM with your email address and I can forward the documentation on to you.

(Can I also request that anyone trying to contact the Professor over the next few weeks, whether is be for assistance, food, or fertilizers that they please exercise some patience. The professor is currently doing a lot of traveling with regards to research and work which is keeping him away from orders and the forum)
