    Hi guys,

    So of late I have noticed very little happening on TASA as far as Discus are concerned.
    I spend a fair amount of time not only on my own fish, but also browsing the internet, chatting to breeders from across the world and reading as much as time allows me on the various types of discus available in the hobby today.
    With more than 100 accepted Discus colour variants (strains) available today, it is of course virtually impossible to firstly appreciate them all, and secondly also to own them all!
    Although I have always been an admirer of the Wild-type discus, there are many of the tank-bred varieties Id also love to own.
    Many of these strains are not available in South Africa, as the prices they demand, coupled with certain difficulties about them makes many strains undesireable to import. Therefore we always see the same types of Discus offered with hardly any change to what is offered.

    So I thought Id start this thread - in here I hope the discus fanatics can post what type of discus theyd like to own. I am not an importer or wholesaler....so dont expect me to tell you Id be getting them for you....at best we could probably "drool" over some nice Discus.

    Id start with 2 types I have admired for a very long time -

    @Marco,

    I would love one of the yellow/golden colours.

    But I am tied into Stendker. And as you know, they only have a handful of the more traditional types

    Hi

    @oscar freak - that is a very nice setup. In something like that the natural looking Discus work superbly. I just cant envision some of the tank bred varieties looking as nice.
    This is a pic of the tank the breeder I got my Xingus from has as a show tank
    [IMG]
    I think its also stunning.

    @Reedfish - yes unfortunately Stendker does not have the greatest variety of Discus. Nothing wrobg with the fish they breed, the types are just a bit restricted.

    Im not a great fan of Yellow type discus. Mostly because they are all Pigeon blood based.
    That was until I saw these recently.....[IMG]

    Unfortunately a similar guy to this passed away when we moved the tank. Lovely fish.

    @Marco,
    That photo is fantastic.

    That person from whom I got those manky fish from.......told me he was in the process of breeding non-PB yellows.
    Knowing his reputation now.....

    @Biggles,
    That is a lovely fish.
    Pity you lost it. :sad2:

    Hi

    @Biggles, that is a stunning Blue diamond!
    Very very nice. Pity you dont find many of that quality around.

    @Reedfish -
    Id be interested to know what type that supplier intends breeding.
    This yellow one is an Albino Turquoise, and I like it very much!
    I find it to be a clean looking fish, with nothing messy about its colours and the way it combines.

    Not many albino discus get imported into SA, again due to the prices they demand. Some Albino golden and Albino Turks are available here from time to time but in general the quality is not great. Across much of Europe and the USA they seem to be quite the craze though, and has been for the past few years.
    Im just about beginning to like them.....

    I like the natural looking discus, the Curipera (sp?) specifically:
    Alenquer_Curipera_2.jpg

    If I'm ever brave/disciplined enough to keep Discus, I'd like some of those. For now, I'd manage this:

    @Marco,

    The irony is that idiot is always giving me "advice" on BIDKA. I don't think he knows who it is :nuts:

    @Jenn,
    Give Discus a go!
    They aren't as difficult as is made out.
    Especially some European tank breds have been in capitivity for many generations and are quite hardy.

    I like those cups :) Cost $23.95, about the same as Discus. I'd like a set of 6 - cups & Discus ;)

    @Marco

    This would be a nice one for me, I have always liked the spotted variety like the super eruptions and others like the leopard colour bases. If the Asians could breed this pattern in a turquoise blue colour I would cash in my sons university savings account and get 15 for a 800l tank in my house.

    Regards
    Jason

    Hi

    @jpvd007,

    You and I both .... i love the spotted types. From the wild Red spotted green to the most spotted Eruption around. They are incredible. You ask for a "turquoise blue colour" - Im not sure I understand what you mean though. You will find from same Eruption lines you will get very different looking fish.
    This here is also an Eruption but compare it to the fish in your pic and youll see the difference.
    [IMG]

    They come from same lineage though, although some will have you believe one is a "Super dooper circus red eruption"....and the other a "Super amazing crazy blue face eruption".....in order to charge you even more!

    @SApicoreef - i actually dont have any fry at the moment.
    I recently moved my Royal blues to a breeding cube but they have been very full of 'bleep' and do not even look like spawning yet. Wont last forever though and Im hoping they will spawn soon. I have been focused on some Angels of late so havent been trying to get the Discus to breed but will attempt to get them spawning again soon. Hopefully they quit with their moody behaviour...

    Rgds

    Hi @jpvd007

    Bybthe way - the 2nd fish you posted they dont breed much anymore. Its actually a "Green Snakeskin" and very few are still bred.
    Now the only reason why I know them is because the Royal blues I have, as well as some snakeskin discus I used to breed are from an original Wild Blue and Green Snakeskin cross.
    This was one of the original Snakeskin offspring I had from that cross with fry of its own.
