So i have this tank that is just standing empty. I have no space in the house but do have quite a large covered vernada/stoep. Tank is 1.6m x 50 x 50. What can i put in it that would not require a heater and can stand outside on the veranda? I was thinking about just filling it with water and throw in some guppies and mollies etc...iv'e seen this by a breeder who does not even use any filtration,Just plants in the tanks....? Let me hear some ideas... If I don't do anything with it soon, the tank will have to go into storage
with some filtration you can get a like a huge school of white cloud mountain minnows (like 50-100) they would be beyond awesome. or you can be boring and get goldfish. I'm not 100% sure but I think some cory's can also handle cooler water. my main concern would be algae infestation from all the light. but ja as I was saying wcmm are awesome schooling fish with a nice powerhead they would be playing in the turbines all day long, would be a sight to behold.
I also vote white clouds. Let them breed and sell them to the LFS. There's never a shortage of demand for white clouds.
That's a nice big tank, I would go low-tech planted (like a dianna walstad soil tank) with a wcmm school as mentioned, a bunch of D.rerio either the plain or pearl form, a school of peppered cory's (C.paleatus), a school of buenos aires tetra's and another group of rosy barbs with some guppys or endlers mixed in as well as a few black molly's (P.sphenops) to chow the algae. The rosy barbs and buenos aires tetra's will munch on some of the plants, so I would add them later on when the tank is fully grown.
Also goldfish can look stunning in a nice big tank like that, and they really are not that boring. I felt the same as Ray about them untill I owned some. A plain barren goldie tank can be drab, but in a planted setup it adds some naturual beauty, just google goldfish planted tank and see for yourself. Besides molly's and guppys you can add basically any livebearer and bloodfin tetra's are also a choice ,if you can find them. Paradise fish are also an option, but they can be very aggresive and have long fins that some fish can't resist nipping at.
I also seem to remember that most barbs take lower temperature well too, so a huge school of tiger barbs or even better ruby of Odessa barbs would be off the hook oh it will be more expensive but have you seen golden white cloud mountain minnows now those are uba uba
Thanks for all the replies guys, looks like the tank will be used after all! Now to sort out the stand and the floor as the stoep is on a raised wooden deck.
