    Hi all,

Last night I returned home after being away for 4 weeks, so it’s time for some small water changes. When I left a few members had had some trouble with the water from the taps in Cape Town. Anybody know what it’s like now? I’m located in the Southern Suburbs.

I’ll run some tests and see if it’s any different from when I left.

Thanks in advance for any input,
    James

Check the kh. I still have near 0 out the tap in table view. I buffer with coral and bicarb.

@BoelderBeestie kh is 0 as well. Are you buffering the water before adding it to the tank or after?

Before and in the filters. I add one teaspoon of bicarb to a barrel (220L) before a water change and have a small bag of coral in the filter. This makes my kh around 2. Ph stays around 6-6.5

Thanks for the advice it’s working well. Also are you doing anything in particular to reduce your water usage? Only thing I can think to do is scaling back water changes.

My strategy for low WC's esp in winter when I do not want to add the ice blocks from the tap to the tanks. More water polishing, purigen and regular bacteria adding. I do run tanks low temp that also helps.

Had a terrible fishy nose on 36 degrees the other day - boosted it with some JBL denitrol and today the tank smells so good I want to grab a glass - but won't ;-).

Side not - and this seems to be relevant for most bacteria products - you need to clean your filter media more often, be is the HOB, pre-filters and canisters. Less of an impact on HMF's it would seem, maybe because of the lower flow rate ?
