wavemakers

Hey guys!

Well here is a throw back from my nano marine tank.

I have placed two small wave makers in the 250L tank with the G. altifrons tank. The added current immediately triggered a feeding response from the fish in a BIG way! They started sifting the sand like I haven’t seen before.

I would love to hear what is the general feeling on adding current to a tank with either power heads or wave makers…

That is quiet interesting. I am guessing, but it might be that the added current is causing a better distribution of oxygen in the tank, and maybe also elevating the ORP of the water in the tank?

It could also be that the Geophagus normally prefer the faster flowing parts of the river?

 

yea they do come from a riverine system... not to sure how much flow they need.... now the question is.... do i add a CLS to my big tank or not?

I have two really small wavemakers at home with an alternating trip switch to cause a pendulum effect of the water. Would be interesting to see what you guys reckon? As far I understand, water movement is good, especially chaotic movement.

 

Those on/off "wavemakers" are quite "hard" on the pumps they drive. I've used them before with cheapy pumps but found the pumps only lasted about 6-8 months. The fancier wavemaker systems generally only dial back the pumps to 30% power or so and change more gradually.

 

Keep us updated as I wanted to add some to my tank to eliminate dead spots ?

 

Henk is forever causing waves, he doesn't need a wavemaker, what the hell for?

Guys this worked really well and if i ever have fish from a river type setup again i will add a wavemaker of some sort.

 

What is the smallest size wave maker you get? and would it be ok to add it to a tank with silver dollars and clown loaches, placement will be in bottom corner of the tank, was thinking of using a small powerhead.
Whats the price on a wave maker?

 

No Henk is a big wavemaker, nothing small about him!

 

@Donny... Rather look out for one of those Sunsun Flow pumps - you get a 3000 liter an hour one for round R160 from most marine shops...
What I like about it is that it moves a column of water rather than the concentrated jet of a powerhead... Go ahead - your Clown Loaches will love you for it...

Donny - dont put it at the bottom as it will suck up sand and damage the pump. If you are willing to spend money the tunze nano streams are really nice.
