Hey guys I have started a waterfall paludarium it’s still in the early stages. I will get to the plants in the actual water substrate in the next few days. However I’m battling to find plants that I can grow only on my waterfall rock with no substrate. There are loads of cracks and crevasses where the water gets so the roots can go in nicely. Does anyone have experience in plants like this that will thrive in these conditions? Thanks 7CE638DF-AFEE-495F-B8AE-C310443F10B6.jpegA69BA5D0-9C8F-4DE5-B85E-4DD758299106.jpegF1B2E039-4575-456F-9D53-9A64755DC221.jpeg2C67368C-BE43-4713-B6D8-7FFE4D15E783.jpegA4D1FB49-4C94-42A4-B13F-FC78B44F6EB4.jpeg43F1619C-DC24-40F8-860B-CB2DF10E70E5.jpeg

This is amazing!! Are you going to keep it only planted or add fish eventually?

Thanks bud , I Definitely would like to get some fish and throw in a couple of shrimp. I just would prefer to get all the plants in the waterfall and in the substrate first.

What a great project! Going to look awesome!

I see you already have terrestrial mosses, which should do well.

one option is to use aquatic epiphyte plants (eg anubias bonsai, bucephelandra, hygrofila pinnatifida) in the wabi kusa style. The plants would have to be converted to their emersed growth form, and would need high humidity though

    Thank you .

I have 3 projects in mind , my first was my shrimp tank it is up and running and my female is pregnant.

This waterfall paludarium is my second project and is going very well for now. As I am new to the fresh water side of things, the plants that you mentioned are these generally available in LFS that sell aquatic plants or are they more difficult to get?

Good aquarium stores should be able to get them for you, and they are all available in the Epic Aquatics range which is a local grower. Where are you based, then local guys could help point you in the right direction.

Emersed growth is not exactly beginners stuff but definitely doable. I suggest you research wabi kusa eg on YouTube, lots of very educational stuff there. Wonder if a little misting system might be the answer for your setup.

If there are some crevices that could be filled with a little bit of aqua soil, even more plant options open up. Eg ones I can think of that convert quite quickly are rotala rotundiflora (aka indica), giant baby tears, hydrocotyle tripartita, and I hear Monte Carlo too. I would plant small cuttings of the growth tips and let them grow out into emersed state, misting frequently.

As far as I understand dwarf hair grass should also do fairly well emersed if given a bit of substrate.

Thanks for the informative response again @A new day . I live in the south of Joburg but I dont mind taking around joburg to get what I need.

I’ll do some research now on YouTube and I’ll have a look for some spots where I could put some aqua soil.

Aqua Empire in Randburg comes to mind, I’ve courrierd in things from them before. Just checked their website, they don’t ship during level 3 but perhaps they will from Tuesday, or alternatively visit them. Also check with @ShrimpNation for example.

I half thought they marked all the plants as out of stock seeing that they don’t ship plants during level 3... perhaps phone?

Aqua Empire is a good choice - their website doesn't really keep up to date with stock though, so a phone call or visit would be better. They have a Facebook page that they regularly post videos to with stocking updates. Online options would be McMerwe, or check out BetterWeather on the East Rand.

Nice project btw, going to look awesome!

Getting decent plants in with lockdown is a mission. But hopefully with the lesser restrictions now it will go a bit better. Have a couple of pots if you are keen. Can drop me a message :)
