Thinking aloud: does anyone use hydrogen peroxide to pretreat their water? Not dosing directly into the aquarium, of course, but into their water aging containers.

It should help decompose the chloramine in the tap water. And kill bacteria and viruses in the water (depending on concentration used).

Chlorine already disinfects water, and as far as I know Hydrogen peroxide only reacts with chlorine in more alkaline (pH >7) conditions otherwise it is not spontaneous and the reaction will be less successful. This works because H2O2 can react with freely available chlorine to form HCl in solution. Whether the reaction can also clear out chloramine (NH2Cl) is not clear and I knowing that I don't think using it as a dechlorinator is a good idea. It's much easier to use Sodium thiosulphate (leaves ammonia, not always an issue) or even better Seachem Prime.

Thanks. I've never tried peroxide in the aquarium but I have used it in the pool when I have had high levels of stabiliser (sodium dichloro-isocyanurate???). Chemistry was a long time ago (I'm a chemical engineer so I did do 3rd year chemistry.). Peroxide is used in waste water applications. Look here:
    http://www.h2o2.com/industrial/applications.aspx?pid=107

    I'll resist the temptation. :)

Looks like I am off of WCs until it rains again. I accidently left my 5000 L water tank open to the pool and now the tank is empty. No rain water = no WCs. Holding thumbs it rains in PE soon
