    Hi people.
Been browsing the news, came to my attention that local authorities in Gauteng is concerned about water borne diseases following the recent floods. Now, our normal tap water get treated against the nasties. But after rains and flooding, like we had of late, water treatment plants tend to make emergency treatments,, they boost the clorine or substitute with chloromine to provide us with safe drinking water. This can become an issue if you intent doing water changes over the next few days as safe water for us humans is not so safe for our fish.
My warning thus, do note that extra treatment chemicals might be present in your water which would nececitate extra neutralisers!
Chloramine does not break down as chlorine does, so extra care needs to be taken.., see other threads relating to this.
Hope you haven't lost any fish yet because of this.

    Regards

    Thx for the warning JJ.

I too keep an eye on these things!

Tap water here in PTA generally contains more chlorine / chloromine :suspicious:

Thanks for the heads up. Microbe Lifts dechlorinate will remove both chlorine and chloromine

The first thing I noticed after getting home from Cape Town on Saturday, was the smell of chlorine coming from the shower... So yeah, double, or triple your dosage of your chosen chlorine removal product.

Do you guys know if the water treatment cannisters, either the jug type, or the installed on tap type, removes enough of the chlorine or chloromine to make it safe for use in our tanks? I know the marketting claims, but haven't used it myself to give an opnion on this.

I have a nice contact here in Pta East that helps me with any water related issues.

As far as I understand it, if the filter has a carbon block it does remove the chlorine / chlormine. Not sure how much though.

I shall find out and revert back tomorrow with my findings!

@Flash, What do you have to report by way of the water?

If you put your water change water into a spare bucket with an airstone will that not remove the extra chlorine/chloramine from the water even after using your water prep?
