    Hi all

Just checking if durbanville area water safe to use for fishtanks? I still use the tap water and age it for 2-3 days, but i am sure the die off i have had and sometimes still experiencing is because of it,

If its not safe to use anymore- then please reply with alternative.

    Appreciate any advise. Thank you

The best bet would be to get the water tested - both your tap water as well as the aquarium water. If you don't have a test kit, many pet stores with aquariums are happy to do the tests for a small fee. It's important to determine if the problem is your water supply, or if it is an internal problem that needs to be corrected.

Are you absolutely certain that the deaths occurred after the water change? Was there a temperature, pH, or other difference between the tap water and aquarium that might have shocked the fish? Could the die off have been caused by anything else, such as a failed biological filter causing the tank to cycle again?

A bad water supply is possible, as it has been on many occasions across SA. Often you can tell - it may look or smell bad - but other problems aren't so obvious. If it is the case of a bad water supply, you can look into filtration units for your home, ranging from basic mechanical and carbon based systems right through to RO. If the water is really bad, this system might be a good idea for your own health too. You can also look at sourcing your water from elsewhere - for example, some pet stores sell RO water, but bear in mind that RO water needs to be chemically buffered to be suitable for use with fish (with some odd exceptions).

    Regards,

I’m in the Northern Suburbs. My water is fine. I’m doing much less frequent water changes due to the drought. Only about 25% every 2 weeks at the moment.

My plants are exploding. My cherry barbs and Angels are spawning. As are my Trumpet Snails which is a little annoying.

    Cheers

try calling the municipality, they should be able to tell you what they put in the water.
