    Hi,
Does anyone here lives in the Hartbeespoort dam area or, know if the tap water quality is good to use in an aquarium?
    Thanks.

Hi Beesboer I know there was a lot of concern about the drinking water earlier this year and there was calls to get it fixed. And after 2 months reports about it died down and I haven't heard anything after this article about it: http://www.rainharvest.co.za/2010/03/10/hartbeespoort-dam-drinking-water-unsafe/

Yes I know it's unsafe to drink, we use borehole water to drink & only use the water for bathing & watering the plants ext.
Does any one know of someone who is using Harties tap water in their tanks?
    Thanks!

I dont know sorry, but as far as I know the reason why the tap water is unsafe to drink is due to the high levels of ammonia in it which means raw sewage has gotten into the water so I am guessing it might not be safe for an aquarium till its been treated. High levels of ammonia isn't good for fish.

Why not use the borehole water in your tanks. Have you tested your borehole water recently?

Borehole water is usually very hard, and high KH+ So you would need to possibly run it through an RO unit... making it expensive.. which is why I think beesboer is asking about the tap water. Maybe contact Hartes aquarium and see what they say?

That is why I asked if the borehole water has been tested.

    Just an update:
I have contacted the Harties Aquarium & they said that if I dechlorinate the tap water & let it stand for about 3day it should be fine.
They are using borehole water, and luckily I live nearby the Aquarium so I suppose our borehole water should then also be safe to use in a tank.
I think I'll try the tap water first as it's much more convenient.
    Thanks everyone!
