Blockage to the sump. So the overflow isn't getting enough water down into the sump. Or your pump has magically become stronger

well i'm just calling it a sump, its actually 3 compartments sectioned off on the side of my tank with a small gap where the water passes thru to the 1st compartment where the heater is then up and over into the next compartment where the filter medium is then under to the next compartment where the powerhead is pumping the water back.now i used to have a top layer of cotton wool then a layer of carbon then a compressed layer of cotton wool and then the course stones.i have since gotton rid of the layer of carbon could this have been a cause?

That would only explain a small drop in the water level, equivalent to the 'volume' of Carbon you took out.

What I don't understand here is how your tank level can go up?? Surely it can only go as high as the overflow into your 'sump'?

The only other thing I can think of is that the return pump is pumping the water out of the sump quicker than it is getting through from the tank? Again I struggle to see how if there is an overflow into the sump??

Maybe take a picture so we can see?

    Regards
    G!

i was thinking that maybe the gravel is blocking the return flow,i will do a check and cleaning when i get home and take some pics

i just changed the top layer of cotton wool and im gonna get sum carbon this weekend and i'll change the compressed cotton wool as well, apparently u not suppose to change it all at once

    and no over flow btw
