    Hey guys newbie here,

I noticed in Cape Town we have high PH water but really soft water. Does everyone around the city use crushed corral etc to increase the stability? Or is the soft water fine for most aquarium bred tropical fish? I know for my shrimp tank I will need harder water as shrimp need the nutrients.

Have you tried testing your tap water after it sits for 24 hours as I find mine comes out high then drops to about 6.4 after aging it. My GH and KH is 0-1, but I only used crushed coral for fish that require high pH, hard water.

Hi @Shrimp_Hoops and welcome to TASA
I agree with @Chandz and it works for most fish, as well as neocaridena shrimp and Amanos. Didn’t work for other caridena shrimp.

What kind of shrimp do you keep/ intend to keep?

I noticed it started out close to 8 and now its been a week its dropped to around 7.1-7.3 Ph which im glad. Ahh ok thanks , should I consult the supplier about their parameters before buying

thanks for the welcome! I am hoping to have another tank with cherry shrimp (the cliché newbie shrimp - or so ive heard)

I have ghost shrimp that are multiplying rapidly, as well as neocaridina. Both seem totally fine in the water. I do throw in a pinch of crushed egg shell periodically just to ensure there's enough calcium. My pH sits at around 6.8ish (CT northern suburbs).

Ok cool so you might know already but cherry shrimp are neocaridena. About 1/2 teaspoon crushed coral on a 2 foot tank usually does the job on our water
