Water crises or not

After reading beesboer’s thread on borehole water and this mornings news paper, I am very concerned over the state of our water supply/table.
For how long will our borehole water be safe:questionmark:

I wouldn't use borehole water for tank water.

 

Khalid currently stuff like river pollution and dam pollution goes un-checked and un-punished because the people who are doing this are the big mines so government, and sometimes raw sewage gets dumped strait into the water table because only about 15% of South African sewage treatment plants are up to world standards and functioning properly the rest are falling apart. Though they dont like to admit it, it was on Carte Blanche some time ago and it was pretty shocking. The whole system is falling apart so I guess it is only a matter of time before this stuff seeps into the ground water table, I never drink strait from the tap anymore I run it through a filter system first.

 

Where does this leave the ornamental fish trade industry?
Does it have an expiry date in Gauteng /RSA?

My prediction only the super rich will be able to afford this hobby.

 

Naw like everything else there is ways to treat the water before using it for the fish tank so no need to go into a panic about it, I bought those 30liter drums with the tap on the bottom which I fill with tap water then I add some water conditioner and let it stand for a couple of days and before I add it to the tank I adjust the temp and the PH.

The water in my area is really really hard and chlorinated to hell and back.

Yeah it is terrible hence I filter everything before I put my lips to it.

 

Taking into consideration the oil spills in our oceans and the pollution in our freshwater.
With the current direction we heading in 20 or 30 years time will we be able to afford to keep marine or tropical fish?

WE will still be able to afford the hobby but we will all have to have RO units and so on to clean the water... and maybe solar panels to keep the heaters running...

 

Suppose it depends on what we mean with "average South African" since I believe most hobbies are not within the reach of an average South African at present -- since you can read this and have a fishtank you should already consider yourself a privileged South African.

Hi all. I don't if guys knew Pier. He had a fishfarm in somerset west a while ago. back them he had a 7-stage filtration system thru which he filtered most of his water for his breeding tanks. it was a simple home made glass system with different grit and coral chip. this way one can eliminate all the bad thngs. Bottom line is the members of this forum should post all their diy gAdgets and methods so others can learn from them.

Yah and i stopped using it for my Scotch as well.

P.S. I use a 7stage reverse osmosis sytem as well for all my drinking and cooking water as well as my fishtank.

One thing iv noticed about aquarists is that we are an ingenious bunch, we will make a plan for our hobby, so even if things become expensive we will make a plan to make it happen, even on my saltwater, lots of diy done, with a little bit of creativity and effort, ul be amazed at what u can do, guys why not invest in a reverse osmosis unit? Will ensure your fish swim in crystal clear pure water
