    Hi All

    I have searched the site for related articles, but my searching skills suck I think.

    Anyway, it struck m this morning....is it good to use straight tap water when doing 20-30% water changes weekly?

    If not what is the correct way to handle this?

    Looking forward to your responses.

    Riaan

    Good idea to use a dechlorinator with the tap water you are putting in the tank

    @Cropheus, Hi Riaan,

    Yes it is fine to use straight tap water but, you MUST use a water conditioner like Sera Aquatan, Tetra Watersafe, Seachem Prime etc, which effectively removes most of the deadly chemicals from the water. The only thing you must remember is that when replacing the water from the tank it should be at the same temp as the tank. One other thing to take into account is that it is best if your water "Fizzes" when coming out of the tap because it assists in breaking down the Ammonia in the water.

    The other alternative is to buy yourself a container that you can fill with water and leave it in the sun for at least a week so that the water "ages" naturally before you put it into your tank, effectively neutralising any toxins or chemicals in the water.

    I'm not familiar in using the standing water method but I know that @gdt78 uses this method, so maybe he is one of the best people to advise on this method.

    Regards
    Kim

    Um... don't stand the water in the sun. Algae will take over, and you stand the risk of insects laying their eggs in the water. Sealed container with air pump and/or filter is perfect
