I was at one of the wholesalers yesterday - that supplies most of the shops across the country...

They have blue painted angels in stock for sale ... not to mention painted parrots etc etc

Those of you looking for the Blue Angel becarefull not to get any of these. The blue angel is a line bred variety of angel unlike this painted/dyed fish.

That is sick as to how crule they can be and being sneaky by making them look like a blue angel.
Thanks for the heads up. I feel sorry for the little guys, angels are one of my favourite fish.
Its not nice knowing that this stuff is still going on beacuse of the business they have from people who dont know otherwise buying them
thinking that there is nothing wrong with them. Then they die and they go and get another one and the shop doesnt care because they are just gald to get some income.

    Dolphin, thanx for the warning.
I do think that it is the people visiting the wholesaler, and buy this fraudulent fish from them, that could make the difference, and leave it at the wholesaler!
I'm glad to hear that you have not been part of distributing this type of fish.
Have you said anything to them?
I strongly believe that the people, buying from the wholesalers, are supposed to be knowledegable and have the money vote to stop this practice right there!
Immagine, buying this stuff, and while you are driving to your shop, what must be going through one's mind? - "my sucker customers are going to fall for this and I'm going to benefit financialy" -Sick!

It goes beyound whatever we can say. But I have a question, and hope on my first day here I dont tred on toes. Is there really such a difference between 'dye' and 'forced' breeding as in the case of Parrot- and the newer Flowerhorn Cichlid's? To me its just all wrong. Fact is as far as even creating new Discus strains a great many fish get killed of just to 'protect' a lineage so the breeder can continue his program. Unfortunately there will always be this behaviour. Why? It makes money! Makes me sick though!

I merely asked what the survival rate of this fish is and was told they've been there for 2 weeks and the guy got all defensive...

I dont buy any livestock from this wholesaler or any other local wholesalers as I've had terrible losses with fish from these sources.

Most LFS dont care and/or are uneducated when it comes to this type of thing so when they see these fish its really about making a quick buck.

At the end its up to the hobbyist to not purchase such fish...

Well for the discus keepers as well, take note.some exporters are known to immerse discus into saline baths for a couple minutes then remove.as the skin begins to dehydrate the fish is immersed into coloured water and guess what?you have an immpresively coloured discus.these are done prior to export so when you walk into a lfs you see a beautiful fish with bright colours which you buy and after 2 weeks or so wonder what happened to the colour or why is the fish so stressed.

As a rule of thumb when I was keeping discus rather book the fish and wait 2 weeks to monitor the progress of colour and health than end up with not what you saw when the lfs brought them in

this is why i have been advocating for local breeders to show some grit, breed decent fish, ask a fair price for your effort. Problem is, some LFS prefer buying from either w.salers or import themselves. Yet any local fish has the advantage of being accustomed to local water, not spending 36 to 48hrs in transit in an ammonia infested bag. It just makes sense so why is it not done?

You do get non-dyed blue angels, they're just not very common yet. Much, much prettier than the dyed versions.
