Wanted. Pygmy sunfish

Hi does anyone keep and breed Pygmy sunfish in Cape Town. Or know what shops might have them. Would be interested to getting myself some to add to my collections.

Beautiful fish but UNFORTUNATELY, this fish is on the NEMBA list of Prohibited Freshwater Fish species

 

Yes sad we cant get them. Reality they so small could hardly see how they could become invasive...

 

The reason why such fish, or should I say, why all fish that are on these lists, are on there in the first place, is narrowed down to the following reasons:

1. The potential damage they can and/or will cause if they are released into any ecosystem here in SA.

2. The rate of them being over fished from their respective natural environments.

3. The NEED to protect, conserve & sustain all native / indigenous Fish & Plants within SA.

Generally when a Fish or Plant appears on a Prohibited list, it is NOT only in terms of it being imported and sold within SA, but also takes into account the numbers of each within their natural environment & the risk it poses to ecosystems, should it be introduced into an ecosystem that it does NOT hail from.....

Google NEMBA LIST OF PROHIBITED FRESHWATER FISH & AQUATIC PLANTS & CITES LIST OF PROHIBITED FRESHWATER FISH & AQUATIC PLANTS.

You will get some PDF files to download, which are lists consisting of the Scientific & Common names of all prohibited fish & plant species.

It's not the latest one, but it will give you a 90% accurate detail.

 

Mosquito fish are also small and are insanely invasive. They harass local fish and eat their eggs, kinda sad really. Size isn't everything!

 

Unfortunately, due to some irresponsible fish keepers, who release these fish into habitats that these fish are not native to, we as serious hobbyist suffer & are unable to get what we desire for our tanks. More than posing a threat, it's the risk of having irresponsible of introduce them into a native ecosystem abd that's it, Game Over
