I'm off to collect my new puffer in a couple hours. I'd like to start breeding snails for him to eat. If anyone has unwanted Ramshorn snails, please chuck them my way. I can collect in Cape Town's Northern Suburbs.

I know they're pests. That's why I'm making a plea for them, cos no-one else wants them. Lol. I'm going to set-up a seperate "farm" for them and chuck in a couple a day for the puffer to chow.

If Xandoz does not mind, if there are any other spare snails i would also like some for a puffer too. Would they breed in a pond? Also willing to collect.

    Howzit @Frank007301
Are you willing to breed them yourself? I don't have enough to supply as food.
They don't seem to reproduce very quickly in my tanks, either the cichlids are chowing the babies or they're not getting enough food.

@Xandos - how do you plan on creating that "farm"?
Frank - I'm sure they'll breed in almost any body of water if you feed them properly and keep the water parameters from reaching extremes.

I had trouble maintaining their shells when I had them in a small tank with a few shells and some cuttlefish bone, thus the population never really got going. I guess there was not enough calcium in their diet and water. You'll probably get better results than I did if you feed foods with a little calcium and let them eat pretty much 24/7... I wasn't too good with that, hence they're back in my tanks and multiplying slower than my cichlids.

The plan is to set up a small basic tropical tank, supply veggies and algae wafer or similar, and go from there. I know they bred like crazy in my goldfish tank when I was a kid, so maybe they prefer cold water? Will have to do a bit of reading first.

Yeah i am hey.I want to first build up enough of a population to sustain itself and then start using them as food. Would probably work well in a pond if Xandoz says they like cold water.

    PM sent to Frank.

Reckon they'll do just as well without a heater (in a pond) but I think they prefer tropical temperatures.
I'm sure if you're happy to give them good veggies like turnip greens and spinach along with a basic flake they will reproduce like crazy.

From my own experiance, I see the Ram horms love to stay under bog wood, they lay thier eggs at the bottom
and under anubius leafs, each lay is about 30-40 (yellow dots in a see though jelly) eggs and each leaf should have 6-8 clumps.
It was a nightmare for me to remove these snails. I got in many clown loaches to control it, but still had to hand pick them
    daily.

Fish Flakes are more then enough for them but yeah i also see they love cucumbers (thats cos I feed cucumbers to my ancistrus)
if you dont want it to spread to your other tank, make sure u keep them safe in one tank/pond. as if they get lose... you will wish u didnt.
You can also get Malaysian Horn snails, they also breed extreamly fast

The malaysian horns are too tough for the puffers to eat easily. Apparently, their shells are too hard.
