Wanted: Fine black sand, Cape Town

Hi Folks,

I'm really sorry to bring this topic up yet again, I'm sure some of you might even get furious because of a repetition, but the truth is, I've looked high and low on the forums, and the web, and don't have a definitive answer.

I'm an operations manager, I don't beat around the bush: Where can I get some really fine black aquarium sand (Seachem or whatever you recommend), how much, and when can I collect.

It really is as simple as that

 

I'm surprised you can't find any at any LPS stored down there. (There's one thing JHB have up on CT!). Our LPS stores carry a lot of fine black substrate now. It's usually called midnight black, or something like that, and up here it retails between R50-R60 per 5kg bag. (Yes, it is pricey, but looks stunning.)

I just noticed you said "sand." Are you wanting sand, or fins substrate?

 

Ah, fine substrate or sand, sorry. The seachem sounds like a really good option, but I can't source someone here who distributes it unfortunately. I'll have to check in with some LPS's this weekend and see who has what I guess..

 

Try Ecopets. Look them up on Google. They have some nice substrates, but it is really expensive! Well, at least in my mind it is!

I have some black gravel, but not fine sand that I got from a guy whos now out of business, but if you are interested send me a PM? Only problem is I leave the country tomorrow for three weeks! Get back early Jan!

I will go during this week to waterfront I found there a whole beach full of beautiful pitch black slate gravel. let you know if its fine enough to be called sand or if it's rather still gravel

 

dude! collecting anything close to the waterfront/harbour is bad news! it's full of heavy metals etc

I think I'm going to go with PFS and lots of rocks, malawi tank! I just can't find awesome rocks :/

ha! no - script was issued on the 7th. They only gave me the pills on friday morning and the ban was put in place by the MCC at 16:00 friday afternoon

 

The ban was just to withdraw the medication from the market... They haven''t officially banned the substance (DPP) yet, but are in the process of making it illegal. And the only reason you got it is because you wined so much at the hospital that they just gave it to you to keep you quiet... HEHE

 

Hi Henk How do you support your claim?? What , how much and when did you collect from the waterfront and from where there and most important what effect did it have on your fish, plants or.....?????

 

Collecting would be illegal in any case.
