I believe they were considering opening the final 2 gates on the dam wall... But decided not to because of the damage it would have caused.

In the second pic with the boat the house is half way under water so what difference would 2 more gates have maid and the worst of all the house is about 200m away from the river as you can see in the last pic

Hi johan hope the damage was not too severe and you and your famaly is fine and unharmed.
Would you know how long the waters take to reach the Augrabies Falls on the lower Orange. Will be quite a site i guess

the damage done by the floods really is sad. I've seen pics on a flyfishing forum that I'm on of the fish killed by the flood, 10's of thousands, probably more. It will take a long time for the river and the people affected by the floods to fully recover from it

We have a place at the river about 7km upstream from the barrage and was there the last few weekends.Just to let all the fish lovers know, the deaths are not that serious as far as my personal opinion goes! A few years ago a lot of fertiliser and sewage was dumped in the river, this killed 500 000 carp, and the boom of offspring afterwards was incredible, this years deaths are not as many as far as I can tell, so there is hope!!!!maybe prof can comment as I would love to know whether I am talking rubbish or not!

Sorry about the damage. That muck looks very fertile though. Ever thought of building on stilts? I am guessing this is not supposed to happen often 200m from the river edge.

If they had opened up the final 2 gates I think the water would have risen a further 150m to 200meters. (According to what I read). I saw pictures of a golf course on the river that the one restaurant that is on the water edge was literally under water--- the roof peak was sticking out the water.

The muck on the grass that you see in the pics is not a good thing cause nothing will or can grow through that cause its to thick and compact the only way to get rid of it is to wait until its dry and then pick it up with a shuffle and wheelbarrow
So I don't think it will work in a tank
