This thread is a run off of http://www.tropicalaquarium.co.za/showthread.php?2293-Silica-Sand-in-Cape-Town

Zoom: Absolutely no good in our tanks. Looks stunning.... but roots simply rot away in it. I used it once. We used it onces on a special concrete mix to get a glass finish instead of ricer sand.... lovely stuff though!!

jpvd007: Ya the lady said it was like dust and that just sounds too hard to work with, did it not cloud the water excessively any ways? I would think that smaller particle would be very light in water and stirrup with the flick of a fish tail.

Zoom: No. No clouding at all. It was honestly the best substrate I've used. No washing. No clouding. But no good for aquarium. Anearobic bacteria bliss

jpvd007: I wonder if it can be use in a Anearobic filter?

    Zoom: It probably can.

@Dirk Bellstedt : Can you answer this one Prof Bellstedt?

The reason why the sand goes anaerobic is due to there not being any water circulation. In a filter the sand will get stirred up and remain aerobic.
