Urgent Help Needed from all you awesome TASA members!

Hi TASA,

I am recieving my new fish tomorrow but I have a problem.

My tank that the fish are going into has divider slots for pieces of glass to slide in to separate my strains. The only problem.... I don't have glass at the moment!

What can I use as a cheap, temporary divider?

You can try chromadeck, (get from signwriters) fine size plastic mesh (sold at Builders) and even tiles. I have used tiles held upright with a polestyrene 'hook lock' in place above the water surface. If its a standard tank a 500 x 500 tile will do. Buy it at ctm as a sample for R5 and ask them to cut to size for you.

Builder's have some fine mesh. Only place I've seen it at. But unless you have something to secure it to the glass, it might fold in on itself.

I like the tile idea.

 

What size fish are you talking about?

Yes - you could use the mesh that you get at the garden shop.

Anything that allows water to pass - depending on your filtration in the tank should work. What is the size of the tank? If it is small enough check the kitchen - maybe a tray could be donated to the cause.

I live out in Harties and the only possible place to go is Harry's Hardware and at a push, Dreyers.

 

Take some 2liter ice cream tubs - punch full of holes(small enough so fish cant get through..) and float in tank with each strain in them untill you can get the glass....

Do I take the full ice cream tub(lid and all) and float that. If that is the case, where do I put the holes? In the top or the bottom or the sides....?

you just make your own "guppy breeder" if you have seen one, just copy that, holes all the way around, even take some wire, fix a wire to the tub,and make a "clip", so that you can hang it on the side of the tank.

Make holes all over Body of tub - for circulation...They float (sort of) anyway - lid keeps fishies in untill you get your glass...QED...
+ the tubs are food grade plastic anyways,so no polutants....just make sure to wash them well before use to get rid of any Sunlight liquid that may be on them from washing up....
