Howzit guys. So for those of you in Fourways area...biggest storm ever My question is do you unplug your fish tank during lightening storms? Cause all I can think of is my little fish getting struck by lightening...

    Thanks

Rather unplug your telkom line ...

If you really prone to being negative and afraid of a positive charge.

    Later Ferdie

Also in Fourways. Everything electronic on surge protectors. Never had an issue. Telkom is the culprit from my experience.

I run my big tank on a UPS with built in surge protector with additional batteries, estimated up to 8hrs of running time before going flat, but that's only my main return pump.

@Farren, I think the money spent is actually to protect your electrical appliances as well as filters pumps etc dont come cheap anymore especially the bigger ones

Where I live, we are BADLY hit by lightning on a regular basis. We are told there is an underground lake that spreads from Walkerville to Klipriver and attracts the lightning.
I never unplug my tanks but our appliances regularly get struck.
Last month was my heat pump and borehole relay were hit as well as an Eskom transformer that was hit twice in one week leaving us without power for 8 hours!!!!
The cost of replacing or repairing appliances outweighs what you spend on protection
Thank God my tanks have never been hit but we do suffer the consequences of the power outages sometimes for quite long periods

100% correct @MariaS. This aquifer is known as the Middle Klipriver Dolomite Groundwater compartment. I've done some deep percussion drilling in the area for a dolomite stability investigation, and this showed a water rest level varying between 16,8m and 30,0m depth (average about 24m). Not sure about it attracting the lightning, but I wouldn't be surprised :) Is your borehole water a bit on the hard side?

@JvH, i am no expert in the field but all the electricians and technical people that have been in the area attribute our bad lightning to that underground lake
Wether its true or not, Im not sure... all i know is that it can get really, really bad.
I have had floor tiles where lightning hit and took chips off the tile.. I know it sounds far fetched but its true..

Anyway.. I guess its nature and we cant fight its power..

Yes... our borehole water is a bit on the hard side...
