Anybody have any success using tumbled clay brick pebbles in a biological filter configuration? Got 3 bags today - want to know if I am going to hit any nasties if I add them to the filter chambers on my outside tanks.

    Thanks

Nope - sorry I should have posted a picture .. here goes.

Hydroton = clay balls baked at high temperature is suitable for hydroponics, acts as a good nutrient store + retain moisture - Think it is an import from Germany.

Clay bricks - might be new to the garden pebble world ... looks like is was scrapped bricks that get rounded to look more natural - must be local... It is rock hard so I am assuming it has been fired.

Cool - what you want to use the hydroton for? I have it working well in a small filter (search for guppy filter in the forum)

I did some testing to use it as a substrate ... that did not work so well ... had a 30 % float ratio. I am growing plant cuttings hydroponically in normal LFS plant baskets filled with hydroton ... works well for root development.

trying it out in corner air filters as a filter media. 1L of 4-10mm hydroton has a surface area of 280 square metres at a retail price of R15

Should work fine - I still like my clothing batting as the initial filter media then hydrton does the trick after that. I also tried perlite ... that was a bad idea.

Keep use posted ... maybe we should start a hydroton thread?
