I have played a bit with emmersed propagation in the past, but that did not really work for me - now I am trying something new and different vs what I did in the past.

Got these food containers that are used for what looks to be hotdogs. In the past I have tried some planting with bonsai soil and that worked ok. I did wonder if I really do need the soil?

While setting up 3 tanks - cleaned them from winter stock. I made some space next to them for these containers.

The idea is that you use the containers upside down, that way any water that evaporates will drop back into the container and not run off the containers side.

I would add 1 cup of water + 1 ml of my fertz solutions - 10g in 500ml water - so that is very diluted.

Then add whatever I want to grow semi emmersed or as a carpet - well that is the plan. No clue how well this would work.

In this case some moss and montecarlo-3

So inside seems like things are going slowly ...

but the surprise growth is in the outside growth tub - added some potting soil since the evaporation get a bit much for just water, even if it condensates back into the tub.

so thinking I need to move them all outside.

Needed the space under the LEDs so moved the tub outside under the newly draped 50% shade cloth.

they are stuck between the two tanks .. maybe sunshine kicks it up a gear ?

Yeah - you had to be here ;-)

The containers work well, keeps all moisture in even during the hottest day - as for growth having substrate like potting soil seems to be a must - so scratch the other idea of no soil.

vs the growth with no soil

I grabbed some 250 micron plastic .. will probably not last in the sun but lets see.

pot03.jpg the 405 shade-cloth did really not help that much ...

pot04.jpg on the flip side might be blocking all that rays I actually need.

BTW moss did not make the attempt.

As clever as the idea of the containers are - one problem ... rain, turns out that the design is not only good at keeping water in but allowing rain in also.

    001.jpg

So plants all took a serious knock.

But I have the opportunity to rescue some crypts and moss - so needed another place to grow them under more controlled conditions. Added a 2ft LED light under the one table - yes I am running out of counter space.

    002.jpg

Hoping this will give me better results.

    003.jpg

    Lets see how things go.
