I think you will struggle to find these here in SA, i've never seen any for sale.

@TheEel you are 100% correct thank you for reminding me @Moolis any chances of you guys being able to get festae in any time?
@Bandit they are a bit rare but i have seen them doing the rounds and have sourced much more rare species on tasa, i have no doubt that the peeps on here can pretty much source anything in this country:)

@woestynbaber, every so called festea I've seen this year were the false red terror, or Mayan cichlid (Cichlasoma urophthalmus) the last place I saw them at were in Pomona. Lfs will swear they're the real deal, but they are not, at least not the ones I've seen. I would proceed with caution.

thank you @Jwh they are actually very easy to distinguish from uropthalmus, as true festae and mayans share a trait of the spot on the tail, a stone dead giveaway is that the festeas spot is higher up were the mayans spot is basically in line with the lateral line, so centered in the tail. the second is that the festaes closest bar to the head has a "Y" shape were as the mayan has "l" straight bar.

You and I know that, but the LFS don't, or will stubbornly insist that it's a festea whilst it's not...

I have seen them, the last I saw was a beautiful specimen in a display tank somewhere, that's when I started looking for some for myself, and I'm still looking. Every Mayan I have seen was labeled as a festae, I thinks a lot of Mayans are sold by the wholesalers as festae, having seen an invoice where the fish was described as such, but was clearly a Mayan. If you find some please let me know...
