i had one piece i got from fish, which was put in a tub of cold tap water while i redid my tank substrate, sadly all the needles broke off for some reason... at least its growing back now, at 5cm atm

It it quite a common plant though, if you have access to a golf course, you may very well find in the ponds.

David I have seen it in a lot of fish places in Pta & Jozi. I'm not familiar with most of the Jozi places but definitely try the Boksburg Exotic Pets, VIP in Cresta & Animal Kingdom that side. In Pta I know for sure most of the fish places around Old Jhb in Centurion always have it in summer. Exclusive Pets, Parrot Inn, Sunflower Pets, Weirda Park pets etc all have it around this time of year. Its dirt cheap - about R5 a string of 30cm or so. Most places will give you some for free if you ask when you've bought something else.
